A costume designer is a person who designs costumes for a film, stage production or television show. The role of the costume designer is to create the characters' outfits or costumes and balance the scenes with texture and colour, etc. The costume designer works alongside the director, scenic, lighting designer, sound designer, and other creative personnel. The costume designer may also collaborate with a hair stylist, wig master, or makeup artist. In European theatre, the role is different, as the theatre designer usually designs both costume and scenic elements. Eugene Lee (designer)
Eugene Lee (born 1939) is an American set designer who has worked as the production designer for ''Saturday Night Live'' since the show's premiere in 1975. Lee has been resident designer at Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island, since 1967. Lee attended Beloit Memorial High School, has a BFA each from the Goodman School of Drama at the Art Institute of Chicago (now at DePaul University) and Carnegie Mellon University, an MFA from the Yale School of Drama and three honorary Ph.Ds. He has won Tony Awards for Bernstein’s ''Candide'', Sondheim’s ''Sweeney Todd'', and ''Wicked'', as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set Design. The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Award, recognizes excellence in live Broadway theatre.
