Grand Prix Tennis Circuit
The Grand Prix tennis circuit was a professional tennis tour for male players that existed from 1970 to 1989. The Grand Prix and World Championship Tennis (WCT) were the two predecessors to the current tour for male players, the ATP Tour, with the Grand Prix being more prominent. Background Before the Open Era, popular professional tennis players, such as Suzanne Lenglen and Vincent Richards, were contracted to professional promoters. Amateur players were under the jurisdiction of their national (and international) federations. Later professional promoters, such as Bill Tilden and Jack Kramer, often convinced leading amateurs like Pancho Gonzales and Rod Laver to join their tours with promises of good prize money. David Pate (born April 16, 1962) is a former professional tennis player from the United States who won two singles titles and eighteen doubles titles during his career. Michael Jeremy Bates (born 19 June 1962) is a British former professional tennis player. He was ranked UK number 1 in 1987 and from 1989 to 1994. He reached a career-high ATP world ranking of 54 from 17 April 1995 to 23 April 1995. During his career he won two Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, Wimbledon in 1987 and the Australian Open in 1991, with tennis partner Jo Durie as well as one singles title and three men's doubles titles. Goran Ivanišević (; born 13 September 1971) is a Croatian former professional tennis player and current coach. He is the only player to win a Wimbledon singles title as a wildcard. He achieved this in 2001 while ranked world No. 125, after being runner-up at Wimbledon in 1992, 1994 and 1998. Ivanišević's career-high singles ranking was world No. 2, achieved in July 1994. Rüdiger Haas (born 15 December 1969) is a former professional tennis player from Germany. Career Despite winning two Grand Prix doubles titles, Haas never competed in the main draw of a Grand Slam event. He did however make some Grand Slam appearances in the juniors. The biggest tournament he participated in as a singles player was the 1991 German Open, part of the ATP Super 9 series. He lost in the first round to Omar Camporese from Italy. The only occasion that he made it past the opening round of a Grand Prix or ATP Tour tournament was in the 1991 Kremlin Cup, where he defeated Soviet Sergei Skakun, before being eliminated in the second round by Jakob Hlasek.
