Frank Nelson Cole
Frank Nelson Cole (September 20, 1861 – May 26, 1926) was an American mathematician. He is most famous for discovering the factors of the Mersenne number 267 − 1. Life and works Cole was born in Ashland, Massachusetts. When he was very young, the family moved to Marlborough, Massachusetts where he attended school and graduated from Marlborough High School. He was then educated at Harvard, where he lectured on mathematics from 1885 to 1887. Later, he was employed at the University of Michigan (from 1888 to 1895) and Columbia University (from 1895 until his death in 1926). Professor Cole became the Secretary of the American Mathematical Society in 1895 and an editor of the Bulletin of the AMS in 1897. Cole published a number of important papers, including ''The Diurnal Variation of Barometric Pressure'' (1892). Ashland is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the MetroWest region. The population was 18,832 at the 2020 United States census. History The area now known as Ashland was settled in the early 18th century and inhabited prior to that by the Megunko Native Americans, to which Megunko Hill owes its name. Previously known as "Unionville", Ashland was incorporated in 1846, bearing the name of statesman Henry Clay's Kentucky estate. Cole Prize
The Frank Nelson Cole Prize, or Cole Prize for short, is one of twenty-two prizes awarded to mathematicians by the American Mathematical Society, one for an outstanding contribution to algebra, and the other for an outstanding contribution to number theory.. The prize is named after Frank Nelson Cole, who served the Society for 25 years. The Cole Prize in algebra was funded by Cole himself, from funds given to him as a retirement gift; the prize fund was later augmented by his son, leading to the double award.. The prizes recognize a notable research work in algebra (given every three years) or number theory (given every three years) that has appeared in the last six years. Édouard Lucas
__NOTOC__ François Édouard Anatole Lucas (; 4 April 1842 – 3 October 1891) was a French mathematician. Lucas is known for his study of the Fibonacci sequence. The related Lucas sequences and Lucas numbers are named after him. Biography Lucas was born in Amiens and educated at the École Normale Supérieure. He worked in the Paris Observatory and later became a professor of mathematics at the Lycée Saint Louis and the Lycée Charlemagne in Paris. Lucas served as an artillery officer in the French Army during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871.
