Frank Murphy
William Francis Murphy (April 13, 1890July 19, 1949) was an American politician, lawyer, and jurist from Michigan. He was a Democrat who was named to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1940 after a political career that included serving as United States Attorney General, 35th governor of Michigan, and Mayor of Detroit. He also served as the last Governor-General of the Philippines and the first High Commissioner to the Philippines. Born in "The Thumb" region of Michigan, Murphy graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1914. After serving in the United States Army during World War I, he served as a federal attorney and trial judge. He served as Mayor of Detroit from 1930 to 1933. A panel of 69 scholars in 1993 ranked him among the ten best mayors in American history. In 1933 he was appointed as Governor-General of the Philippine Islands. Frank Murphy (born 2 December 1983) is a former professional rugby union player from Ireland who works as a referee for the Irish Rugby Football Union. He primarily played as a scrum-half. Originally from Cork, Murphy played for his native province of Munster before moving to the English side Leicester Tigers. Murphy began refereeing in the All-Ireland League in 2015, progressing to referee in the British and Irish Cup later that year. He began refereeing at international level in 2016, and has taken charge of games in the European Nations Cup. In November 2016, Murphy took charge of his first Pro12 game, and has since gone on to referee in the Challenge Cup at European level. Francis Murphy (21 May 1947 – 5 January 2017) was an Irish athlete, who specialised in middle-distance running and competed at the 1968 Summer Olympics and 1972 Summer Olympics. Biography Murphy was educated by the Christian Brothers at O'Connell Schools in Dublin. In 1963, he won the Irish schools 880 yards title and two years later in 1965 won the Irish schools senior over 880 yards and 1 mile. He won the first of his 13 Irish AAA titles in 1966 and represented Ireland at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He was secretary of the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association 1972 to 2018 and has served on numerous Gaelic games committees at national level.
