Frank Mehring
Frank Mehring (born 29 December 1970 in Alsfeld) is a German American studies, Americanist and professor at Radboud-Universität Nijmegen, Radboud University Nijmegen. Life and work Mehring earned his Master of Arts, M.A. at the University of Giessen, Justus Liebig University in Giessen, focussing on Romantic literature in English, English Romantic Literature and American Transcendentalism. He received a doctorate in English literature, English and American studies, American Studies in 2001, exploring the manifestation of transcendentalist ideas in the music of Charles Ives and John Cage. His Habilitation, postdoctoral thesis, ''The Democratic Gap,'' examines the transcultural confrontations between German immigrants and the American promise of freedom. Mehring premiered the first performance of the Marshall Plan opera ''La Sterlina Dollarosa'' by Alfred Friendly in Germany. He held a three-year visiting professorship at the John F. Winold Reiss
Winold Reiss (September 16, 1886 – August 23, 1953) was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. He was born in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1913 he immigrated to the United States, where he was able to follow his interest in Native Americans. In 1920 he went West for the first time, working for a lengthy period on the Blackfeet Reservation. Over the years Reiss painted more than 250 works depicting Native Americans. These paintings by Reiss became known more widely beginning in the 1920 and to the 1950s, when the Great Northern Railway commissioned Reiss to do paintings of the Blackfeet which were then distributed widely as lithographed reproductions on Great Northern calendars. Early life and education Reiss was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1886, the second son of Fritz Reiss (1857–1914) and his wife.
