Frank J. Jirka Jr.
Frank Joseph Jirka Jr., (July 27, 1922 – October 2, 2000) was elected as the President of the American Medical Association in 1983, before which he served as the President of the Illinois State Medical Society, President of the Chicago Medical Society and of the Douglas Park Branch of the Chicago Medical Society. Born in Chicago as a grandson of Anton Cermak and nephew of Otto Kerner Jr., Jirka served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of Iwo Jima, due to which he had both legs amputated below the knee. He graduated from Knox College in 1944 where he was a member of the Delta chapter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Jirka earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. The American Medical Association (AMA) is a professional association and lobbying group of physicians and medical students. Founded in 1847, it is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Membership was approximately 240,000 in 2016. The AMA's stated mission is "to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health."
