''Fallout 2'' (also known as ''Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game'') is a 1998 role-playing video game developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Productions. It is a sequel to ''Fallout (video game), Fallout'' (1997), featuring similar graphics and game mechanics. The game's story takes place in 2241, 79 years after the events of ''Fallout'' and 164 years after the atomic war which reduced the vast majority of the world to a nuclear wasteland. The player assumes the role of The Chosen One (trope), the Chosen One, the grandchild of the first game's protagonist, and undertakes a quest to save their small village on the West Coast of the United States. ''Fallout 2'' was well received by critics, who praised its gameplay and storyline, and considered it a worthy successor to the original ''Fallout'' and one of the List of video games considered the best, greatest games of all time. Black Isle Studios is a division of the video game developer, developer and video game publisher, publisher Interplay Entertainment formed in 1996 that develops role-playing video games. It has published several games from other developers. Black Isle is based in Irvine, California, Irvine, California. The idea for the division's name came from the Black Isle in Scotland – founder Feargus Urquhart's ancestral country. Black Isle Studios is most famous for its work on the ''Fallout (franchise), Fallout'' series as well as the critically acclaimed ''Planescape: Torment''. They achieved success with the ''Icewind Dale'' and ''Baldur's Gate'' series of role-playing video games, though they only published the ''Baldur's Gate'' series.
