Francis Cook, 1st Viscount Of Monserrate
Sir Francis Cook, 1st Baronet, 1st Viscount (23 January 1817 – 17 February 1901) was a British merchant and art collector. Early life Cook was born on 23 January 1817 in Clapham, London. He was the son of William Cook and Mary Ann (née Lainson) Cook. Career In 1833, he entered his father's firm Cook, Son & Co. based in the City of London, which traded finished wool, cotton, linen and silk, after travels in Europe and the Near East. From 1869, he was its head, rising to be one of Britain's three richest men. He was created 1st Visconde de Monserrate, Sintra, Portugal, and on 10 March 1886, he was created 1st Baronet Cook, of Doughty House, Richmond, Surrey. Collections In 1849, he bought Doughty House in Richmond and in 1855 the quinta of Monserrate in Sintra, Portugal. Sir Francis Cook, 4th Baronet
Sir Francis Ferdinand Maurice Cook, 4th Baronet (21 December 1907 – 12 September 1978) was a British artist. He was the fourth holder of the Cook Baronetcy. He was the only son of Sir Herbert Cook, 3rd Baronet, inheriting his father's titles in 1939. After World War II he dispersed the majority of the very important family collection of Old Master paintings. Life Educated at Bradfield College, he became an artist, musician and art historian, exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Paintings by Cook appear in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton and Bournemouth. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (1940–78) and an Associate of the Royal Society of British Artists (1938–48). Cook was a founding member of the Jersey Society of Artists, and the Jersey Artists Group. Frank Robert Cook (March 25, 1924 – August 13, 1982) was a Norwegian jazz musician and band leader. Cook was born in Oslo, the son of Axel Brynjulf Christensen Cook (1886–1927) and Ingeborg Alma Cook (née Isaksen, 1888–1982). He was known for his performances in the 1950s with Nora Brockstedt, Per Asplin, Lillian Harriet, and Frank Ottersen, in Rowland Greenberg's quintets and the Carsten Klouman Trio, as well as in his own ensemble, Frank Cook's Orkester, where he played bass together with vocalists such as Anders Saus and Per Müller. Francis Cook (3 November 1935 – 10 January 2012) was a British Labour and later independent politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Stockton North from 1983 until 2010. Background Cook was born in West Hartlepool and was educated at the Corby School (Sunderland), the De la Salle College (Manchester) and the Institute of Education (Leeds). Before his election to the Commons, Cook worked variously as a gravedigger, a Butlins Redcoat, a transport manager at a steelworks, a teacher, and a construction planning engineer. Parliament He was selected to contest Stockton North at the 1983 general election, securing the nomination following the defection of the sitting Labour MP Bill Rodgers who was one of the original Gang of Four who set up the Social Democratic Party in 1981. Frank Cook (6 November 1888 – 25 February 1972) was a Beit Memorial Research Fellow, an eminent obstetric and gynaecological surgeon at Guy's Hospital, Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons in London (1917 and 1924), consulting surgeon at the Chelsea Hospital for Women and a Freeman of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Early life Cook was born on 6 November 1888, the only son of Frank Plant Cook of Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire.
