Frank Cheadle
Frank Cheadle (7 November 1885 – 12 May 1916) was an Australian pioneering rugby league footballer and AIF soldier who fell in World War I. A New South Wales interstate and Australian international representative centre, he was reputedly the first Sydney rugby union player to sign with the new breakaway league in its earliest formative days in late 1907. He played for New South Wales in the first rugby match run by the newly created 'New South Wales Rugby Football League' which had just split away from the established New South Wales Rugby Football Union. Early life Born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Cheadle's family moved to Sydney when he was young. Alan James Whiticker (born 1958) is an Australian non-fiction author and publisher, with over 50 published books on history, sport, biography, true crime and lifestyle. Whiticker writes primarily on matters pertaining to the history of the sport of rugby league in Australia, but he has also published works on subjects as diverse as classical film, pop culture, the Wanda Beach Murders and an adaptation of Homer's ''Iliad''. He is a former teacher and commissioning editor for a publishing company but now works as a freelance writer. Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (18 November 1879 – 30 August 1968), also commonly identified as C. E. W. Bean, was an Australian historian and one of Australia's official war correspondents. He was editor and principal author of the 12-volume ''Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918'', and a primary advocate for establishing the Australian War Memorial (AWM). According to the ''Online International Encyclopedia of the First World War'', no other Australian has been more influential in shaping the way the First World War is remembered in Australia. The 18th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. During World War I, the battalion was raised in 1915 as part of the First Australian Imperial Force, Australian Imperial Force, attached to the 5th Brigade (Australia), 5th Brigade, of the Australian 2nd Division, 2nd Division. It was sent initially to Gallipoli campaign, Gallipoli, where it suffered many casualties before it was withdrawn from the line and sent to France and Belgium, where it served at the Western Front (World War I), Western Front as part of the Australian Corps and took part in most of the major battles between 1916 and 1918. The 2nd Division of the Australian Army, also known as the 2nd (Australian) Division, commands all the Australian Army Reserve, Reserve brigades in Australia.
