''Frank and Francesca'' is an Australian children's television series which first screened on the ABC in 1973. The series of six 30 minute black & white episodes were based on the book of the same name by David Martin (1915-1997) It was produced by Oscar Whitbread for the Australian Broadcasting Commission and was directed by Rick Birch and Douglas Sharp. David Martin (poet)
David Martin (22 December 1915 – 1 July 1997), born Lajos or Ludwig Detsinyi, into a Jewish family in Hungary (then part of Austria-Hungary), was an Australian novelist, poet, playwright, journalist, editor, literary reviewer and lecturer. He also used the names Louis Adam and Louis Destiny, adopting the name David Martin after moving to England. Biography Martin was born in Budapest, but educated in Germany. He left Germany in 1934, spending time in the Netherlands, Hungary and Palestine. In 1937 he travelled to Spain. where he served as a volunteer in the medical service of the International Brigade of the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War. In 1938 Martin joined his father in London, working in his clothing factory, before moving to Glasgow in 1941 where he worked as a correspondent with the '' Daily Express''. Oscar Whitbread
Oscar Ralph Whitbread (26 November 1929 – 16 May 2016) was an English-Australian producer who worked extensively in television. He moved to Australia in the late 1940s. Whitbread started his career at the ABC in 1956, where he served as the Head of Drama, before switching to the same position with the Seven Network. He was responsible for numerous successful series including '' Bellbird'', ''The Flying Doctors'' and the miniseries '' Power Without Glory''. Whitbread was the senior executive producer at Crawford Productions and also worked in England for the BBC, Thames Television, Granada Television and London Weekend Television. During the 1970s, he worked as a lecturer in theatre media studies, at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, New South Wales. Personal life Whitbread was married to Corinne Kerby.
