Francis Hamley
Major-General Francis Gilbert Hamley (1815 – 12 January 1876), was a British Army officer who administered the South Australian government from 1868 to 1869. Hamley was eldest son of Joseph Hamley and entered the army as ensign in the Suffolk Regiment, 12th Regiment of Foot in 1835. Hamley served in the Kaffir War and in New Zealand. He was senior officer in command of the Imperial troops in the colony of South Australia on the death of Governor Sir Dominick Daly, on 19 February 1868. The next day he was sworn in as Administrator of the Government of the Colony, and remained Chief of the Executive till the arrival of Sir James Fergusson, 6th Baronet, Sir James Fergusson on 15 February 1869. He was then only lieut.-colonel. General Hamley died in London on 12 January 1876. Suffolk Regiment
The Suffolk Regiment was an infantry regiment Line infantry, of the line in the British Army with a history dating back to 1685. Kaffir War
The Xhosa Wars (also known as the Cape Frontier Wars or the Kaffir Wars) were a series of nine wars (from 1779 to 1879) between the Xhosa Kingdom and the British Empire as well as Trekboers from the Dutch colonial empire in what is now the Eastern Cape in South Africa. These events were the longest-running military resistance against European colonialism in Africa. The reality of the conflicts between the Europeans and Xhosa involves a balance of tension. At times, tensions existed between the various Europeans in the Cape region, tensions between Empire administration and colonial governments, and tensions within the Xhosa Kingdom, e.g. chiefs rivaling each other, which usually led to Europeans taking advantage of the situation to meddle in Xhosa politics. Sir Dominick Daly (11 August 1798 – 19 February 1868) was a British colonial public servant and administrator during the 19th century, who held positions in British North America, History_of_Tobago, Tobago and South Australia. Born in Ireland to a well-connected family, he obtained the position of private secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Lower Canada in 1822. Sir James Fergusson, 6th Baronet (14 March 1832 – 14 January 1907) was a British soldier, Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician and colonial administrator. Background and education Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Fergusson was the eldest son of Sir Charles Fergusson, 5th Baronet, and his wife Helen, daughter of David Boyle, Lord Boyle, David Boyle. He was educated at Cheam School, Cheam, Rugby School, Rugby, and University College, Oxford (although he left without taking a degree). He entered the Grenadier Guards in 1851 and served in the Crimean War where he was wounded. He retired from the army in 1859. The County of Hamley is a cadastral unit (i.e., a comprehensively surveyed and mapped division of land) located in the Australian state of South Australia covers land located in the state's east north of the Murray River, bordering New South Wales and Victoria. It was proclaimed in 1869 by Governor Fergusson and named after Francis Hamley. Hamley Bridge, South Australia
Hamley Bridge is a community in South Australia located at the junction of the Gilbert and Light rivers, as well as the site of a former railway junction. Named by the government of the day, in honour of the Acting Governor of South Australia Lieutenant-Colonel Francis Gilbert Hamley, whose wife, Lady Edith Hamley laid the foundation stone of the River Light Railway Bridge on 25 July 1868. This bridge carries the Peterborough railway line over the Light River. Other settlements in the area had commenced in the early 1860s, and it was not until 1868 that the junction of the two rivers came under notice as a possible site for a township. Boyle Travers Finniss (18 August 1807 – 24 December 1893) was the first Premiers of South Australia, premier of South Australia, serving from 24 October 1856 to 20 August 1857. Early life Finniss was Birth aboard aircraft and ships, born at sea off the Cape of Good Hope, Southern Africa, and lived in Madras, British India. The governor of South Australia is the representative in South Australia of the monarch, currently King Charles III.
