Francis Croissant
Francis Croissant (1935 – April 16, 2019) was a French archaeologist and art historian specializing in Archaic Greece, especially sculpture. A student at the École normale supérieure (class 1957 L), he has been a member of the French School at Athens and former general secretary of this institution (1968–1974). Archaic Greece was the period in History of Greece, Greek history lasting from to the second Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC, following the Greek Dark Ages and succeeded by the Classical Greece, Classical period. In the archaic period, the Greeks settled across the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea: by the end of the period, they were part of a trade network that spanned the entire Mediterranean. The archaic period began with a massive increase in the Greek population and of significant changes that rendered the Greek world at the end of the 8th century entirely unrecognizable from its beginning. The French School at Athens (, EfA; ''Gallikà Scholà Athinón'') is one of the seventeen foreign archaeological institutes operating in Athens, Greece. History Founded in 1846, the EfA is the oldest foreign institute in Athens. Its early foundation, still a source of considerable prestige, is to be seen culturally connected with French philhellenism and politically with the French East Mediterranean strategy of the time. Facilities It operates an active programme of research in all fields of Greek studies, but primarily in archaeology, epigraphy and Classical Studies.
