Francesco Martino (politician)
Francesco Martino (24 March 1937 – 3 October 2017) was an Italian politician, and the President of Sicily from 1993 to 1995. Biography University professor in Messina, he was the nephew of the former foreign minister Gaetano Martino. Exponent of the Italian Liberal Party, he was elected provincial councilor in Messina. Messina (, also , ) is a harbour city and the capital city, capital of the Italian Metropolitan City of Messina. The Italian Liberal Party ( it, Partito Liberale Italiano, PLI) was a liberal and conservative political party in Italy. Gaetano Martino
Gaetano Martino (25 November 1900 – 21 July 1967) was an Italian politician, physician, and university teacher. Early life and medicine Gaetano Martino was born in 1900 in Messina, Sicily, son of its Mayor Antonino Martino. He graduated in medicine to the Sapienza University of Rome in 1923. He worked as physician for Saint-Antoine Hospital in Paris. In 1934, he became teacher to the University of Messina, and later was also dean of the University from 1943 to 1954. From 1966 to 1967, Martino was also dean of the Sapienza University of Rome. Political career Foreign Minister Martino was a prominent Liberal politician. He was elected in 1948 to the Chamber of Deputies, becoming briefly Minister of Public Education in 1954, under Christian Democrat Mario Scelba. The Sicilian Regional Assembly is the legislative body of Sicily. While it has a long history as an autonomous entity, the modern Region of Sicily was established by Royal Decree on 15 May 1946, before the Italian Republic.
