Frances Kuo
Frances Y. Kuo is an applied mathematician known for her research on low-discrepancy sequences and quasi-Monte Carlo methods for numerical integration and finite element analysis. Originally from Taiwan, she was educated in New Zealand, and works in Australia as a professor in applied mathematics at the University of New South Wales. Education and career Kuo is originally from Taipei, and went to high school in Taiwan. She moved to New Zealand in 1994, and became a student at the University of Waikato, completing a bachelor of computing and mathematical sciences with honours in 1998, and a PhD in 2001. Her dissertation, ''Constructive approaches to quasi-Monte Carlo methods for multiple integration'', was supervised by Stephen Joe. After a year as an assistant lecturer at Waikato, Kuo moved to the University of New South Wales (UNSW) to do postdoctoral research with Ian Sloan. Low-discrepancy Sequence
In mathematics, a low-discrepancy sequence is a sequence with the property that for all values of ''N'', its subsequence ''x''1, ..., ''x''''N'' has a low discrepancy. Roughly speaking, the discrepancy of a sequence is low if the proportion of points in the sequence falling into an arbitrary set ''B'' is close to proportional to the measure of ''B'', as would happen on average (but not for particular samples) in the case of an equidistributed sequence. Specific definitions of discrepancy differ regarding the choice of ''B'' (hyperspheres, hypercubes, etc.) and how the discrepancy for every B is computed (usually normalized) and combined (usually by taking the worst value). Low-discrepancy sequences are also called quasirandom sequences, due to their common use as a replacement of uniformly distributed random numbers. Quasi-Monte Carlo Method
In numerical analysis, the quasi-Monte Carlo method is a method for numerical integration and solving some other problems using low-discrepancy sequences (also called quasi-random sequences or sub-random sequences). This is in contrast to the regular Monte Carlo method or Monte Carlo integration, which are based on sequences of pseudorandom numbers. Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods are stated in a similar way. The Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) was founded in 1956 and is the national society of the mathematics profession in Australia. Ian Hugh Sloan AO (born 17 June 1938, in Melbourne) is an Australian applied mathematician. He was educated at the University of Melbourne (BSc 1958, BA (hons) 1960), University of Adelaide (MSc, 1961) and University College London, where he was supervised by renowned mathematical physicist Sir Harrie Massey, and earned his PhD in 1964. He was a research scientist for the Colonial Sugar Refining company 1964–5, and since 1965 has been at the University of New South Wales, where he has been Scientia Professor since 1999.
