France Rugby League
France Rugby League (in French in the original) was a French rugby league competition which took place in 1995 and 1996. The brainchild of former rugby union star Jacques Fouroux, it was an attempt to market the younger code to a casual audience, as a summer tour contested by regional select teams between seasons of France's regular club championship. The first edition received some positive reviews, but the long term viability of its business model remained unclear, and it was quickly eclipsed by the expansion of Rupert Murdoch's Super League to the French market. Founding France Rugby League was established by Jacques Fouroux, former captain and manager of the French national rugby union team, and former vice-president of the French Rugby (Union) Federation (FFR). Rugby league football, commonly known as rugby league in English-speaking countries and rugby 13/XIII in non-Anglophone Europe, is a full-contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field measuring wide and long with H-shaped posts at both ends. The International Rugby League (IRL) is the global governing body for the sport of rugby league football. The IRL organises the Rugby League World Cup, the oldest international rugby World Cup, as well as the Women's and Wheelchair equivalent. Bernard Laporte
Bernard Laporte (born 1 July 1964) is a rugby player, coach and former French Secretary of State for Sport. From 1999 to 2007, Laporte was the head coach of the France national team. In 2011, he became the head coach at Toulon, after Philippe Saint-André became the new national team coach. He was previously the coach at Stade Français. He was the first fully professional head coach of France. Laporte was president of the French Rugby Federation from December 2016 to January 2023. Playing career Laporte played rugby union at scrum-half and won the French Under-21 championship with UA Gaillac in 1983 and then again in 1984, in which he was captain. FC Grenoble
The Football Club de Grenoble Rugby (FCG) is a French rugby union club based in Grenoble and founded in 1892. FCG was champion of France in 1953–54 French Rugby Union Championship, 1954 and runner-up in 1992–93 French Rugby Union Championship, 1993 during a controversial final, being deprived of the title of champion of France following a refereeing error. The club also won the Challenge Yves du Manoir in 1987 and was finalist in 1969, 1986 and 1990. Franck Mesnel
Franck Mesnel (born 30 June 1961, Neuilly-sur-Seine) is a former French rugby union footballer. He played as a fly-half and as a centre. He is the founder of the French rugby and leisure clothing brand Eden Park. The company was founded in 1987 and is named after the stadium in New Zealand where that year France lost the first rugby union World Cup final. Club career Mesnel played for Saint-Germain-en-Laye (1980/81-1985/86) and for Racing Club de France (1986/87-1996/97). He won the title of the French Top 14, in 1989/90, and finished second in 1986/87.
