Fram2
Fram2 was a private human spaceflight mission operated by SpaceX with a Crew Dragon spacecraft on behalf of entrepreneur Chun Wang. During the mission, Wang and his all-civilian crew — Jannicke Mikkelsen, Rabea Rogge and Eric Philips — were launched into a polar orbit, a first for a human spaceflight mission. During the three-day mission, the crew conducted scientific research. Crew The crew of Fram2 was announced in August 2024. Mission The mission studied the Earth's poles and their space environment. Rabea Rogge is an electrical engineer, robotics, robotic researcher, polar scientist and Space tourism, private astronaut who flew on the SpaceX Crew Dragon Resilience, Crew Dragon ''Resilience'', as part of the Fram2 mission. She is the first list of female astronauts, female Germans, German astronaut. Biography Rabea was born in Berlin and studied in Zürich, specializing in arctic robotics. She obtained her master's degree in electrical engineering at ETH Zurich, currently pursuing PhD from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the Department of Marine Technology, where her research topic is Data-driven navigation, guidance and control for autonomous surface vehicles in harsh conditions. Eric Philips OAM (born 30 April 1962) is an Australian polar explorer, adventurer, polar guide and private astronaut. Biography Philips was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1962. His parents, Keith and Josephine, emigrated to Australia from the Netherlands in 1957. Philips studied at the University of South Australia, attaining a Diploma of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education and Graduate Diploma in Outdoor Education. He was the Director of Outdoor Education at the Timbertop campus of Geelong Grammar School. Philips lives in Victoria, Australia with his wife, Susy, where he runs his own guiding and polar equipment design business, Icetrek Expeditions and Equipment. He has a daughter, Mardi, and son, Kip. Jannicke Jane Mikkelsen (born June 8, 1986) is a Norwegian cinematographer and film director who has worked in the field of virtual reality (VR) cinematography, 3D animation and augmented reality technology, focusing on fringe technology and combining traditional film production with new technologies for films shot in remote areas. Early life Mikkelsen was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the age of 10, she had a horse riding accident that left her paraplegic for a while. She managed to regain the use of her legs. Jannicke developed an interest in 3D technology at the age of 12 during a school project on 3D mapping used by NASA. Crew Dragon
Dragon 2 is a class of partially reusable spacecraft developed and manufactured by American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX, primarily for flights to the International Space Station (ISS). SpaceX has also launched private missions such as Inspiration4 and Axiom Mission 1. There are two variants: Crew Dragon, a spacecraft capable of ferrying four crew, and Cargo Dragon, an updated replacement for the original Dragon 1. Polar Orbit
A polar orbit is one in which a satellite passes above or nearly above both poles of the body being orbited (usually a planet such as the Earth, but possibly another body such as the Moon or Sun) on each revolution. It has an inclination of about 60 - 90 degrees to the body's equator. Launching satellites into polar orbit requires a larger launch vehicle to launch a given payload to a given altitude than for a near-equatorial orbit at the same altitude, because it cannot take advantage of the Earth's rotational velocity. Depending on the location of the launch site and the inclination of the polar orbit, the launch vehicle may lose up to 460 m/s of Delta-v, approximately 5% of the Delta-v required to attain Low Earth orbit.
