The Ideal City (painting)
''The Ideal City'' () is the title given to three strikingly similar Italian Renaissance paintings of unresolved attribution. Being kept at three different places they are most commonly referred to by their location: ''The Ideal city'' of Urbino, Baltimore, and Berlin. Hubert Damisch, who has written at length about the paintings, refers to them as the ''"Urbino perspectives"'' or ''"panels"''.Damisch H., ''The origin of perspective'' (transl. by J.Goodman) Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, 1994. The three paintings are dated to the late 15th century and most probably they have different authors but various attributions have been advanced for each without any consensus. The ''Coronation of the Virgin'' (in Italian ') is a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin by the Italian Renaissance master Filippo Lippi, in the Uffizi, Florence. History Francesco Maringhi, '' procuratore'' of the church of Sant'Ambrogio in Florence, left money after his death in 1441 for a new painting at the high altar of the church. Bills of the payments for the work until 1447 have been preserved. In the late 1430s, brother Filippo Lippi had left the convent of the Carmine convent to open an artist workshop of his own; however, having no money enough to pay assistants and apprentices, he worked alone with two usual collaborators, Fra Carnevale and Fra Diamante, along with an unknown "Piero di Lorenzo dipintore". Giovanni Boccati
Giovanni Boccati or Giovanni di Pier Matteo Boccati (c. 1420 – after 1480) was an Italian painter. Biography Boccati was born in Camerino, in the region of Marche. He lived and worked in Camerino, Padua, Perugia, and Urbino. His first documented work is the ''Madonna del Pergolato'' (1447); that painting, ''Madonna dell’Orchestra'', and a ''Pietà'' (1479) are on display in the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria in Perugia. By 1445 he had become a citizen of Perugia. It is not known where he was trained, but his painting suggests the influences of painters such as Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, and Domenico Veneziano. He painted frescoes in the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino, and an altarpiece (1473) in Orvieto. In 1480, he was paid for two altarpieces in Perugia. He painted a ''Virgin and Child enthroned, and surrounded by Angels, Seraphim, and Saints'' (1447) in Perugia. The Ducal Palace () is a Renaissance building in the Italian city of Urbino in the Marche. One of the most important monuments in Italy, it's been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. History The construction of the Ducal Palace was begun for Duke Federico III da Montefeltro around the mid-fifteenth century by the Florentine Maso di Bartolomeo. The new construction included the pre-existing Palace of the Jole. The solid rock hillside salient was impregnable to siege but was problematic for carving out the foundation of a palace. Thus, a prominent fortress-builder, Luciano Laurana, from Dalmatia, was hired to build the substructure; but Laurana departed Urbino before the living quarters of the palace were begun. Leon Battista Alberti
Leon Battista Alberti (; 14 February 1404 – 25 April 1472) was an Italian Renaissance humanist author, artist, architect, poet, Catholic priest, priest, linguistics, linguist, philosopher, and cryptography, cryptographer; he epitomised the nature of those identified now as polymaths. He is considered the founder of European cryptography, a claim he shares with Johannes Trithemius. He is often considered primarily an architect.
