Fortepan is a community photo archive based in Budapest, Hungary, established in 2010. Today the archive contains thousands of digitized high-resolution archival photos that capture everyday twentieth-century life in Hungary. Fortepan photos are organized along an interactive timeline and are publicly available for anyone to search, tag, download, and use. History Founding Fortepan was created in 2010 by Miklós Tamási and Ákos Szepessy, who met while attending the Kaffka Margit High School in the late 1980s. Sharing an interest in old photographs, they started to collect discarded prints and especially negatives from family collections, which they found at flea markets, in the streets of Budapest during "lomtalanítás" (Budapest's annual junk clearances held at different times of year across the city), and estate sales. Blinken Open Society Archives
The Blinken OSA Archivum (abbreviated as the 'Archivum'') is a dynamic archival institution that aims to explore new ways of assessing, contextualizing, presenting, and making use of archival documents both in a professional and a consciously activist way. It was founded by George Soros in 1995, and opened in 1996 as a department of the Central European University. Originally called simply Open Society Archives (OSA), in 2015 it was renamed Vera and Donald Blinken Open Society Archives after receiving a major donation from the couple. The Archivum changed its name once again in 2024, and assume the current one, together with a new look and new websites. Its archival holdings relate to post-war European history, the Cold War, the history of the former Eastern Bloc, samizdat, the history of propaganda, human rights, and war crimes. An archive is an accumulation of Historical document, historical records or Historical source, materials, in any medium, or the physical facility in which they are located. Archives contain primary source documents that have accumulated over the course of an individual or organization's lifetime, and are kept to show the history and function of that person or organization. Professional archivists and historians generally understand archives to be records that have been naturally and necessarily generated as a product of regular legal, commercial, administrative, or social activities.
