Fort Of Archeira
The Fort of Archeira is located in the municipality of Torres Vedras, in the Lisbon District of Portugal. It is also today known as the Furadouro Redoubt and was called the “Cheira” at the time of construction. Construction began in 1810 as part of the first of the three Lines of Torres Vedras, which were defensive lines to protect the Portuguese capital Lisbon from invasion by the French during the Peninsular War (1807–14) or, in the event of defeat, to protect the embarkation of a retreating British Army. Background Despite the defeat of French forces in earlier invasions of Portugal during the Peninsular War, the threat of further invasions led the commander of the British troops in Portugal, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, to order on October 20, 1809 the construction of three defensive lines to the north of the capital, between the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. Lisbon District () is a district located along the western coast of Portugal. The district capital is the city of Lisbon, which is also the national capital. Sobral De Monte Agraço
Sobral de Monte Agraço () is a municipality in the District of Lisbon in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 10,156, in an area of 52.10 km2. The present Mayor is José Alberto Quintino, elected by the Unitary Democratic Coalition. History During the Peninsular War, Sobral was on the Lines of Torres Vedras, a line of forts planned by the Duke of Wellington to protect Lisbon. In October 1810, a French army led by André Masséna approached the Lines, finding that the Portuguese had subjected the area in front of them to a scorched earth policy. After the minor Battle of Sobral on 14 October, the French found they could go no further. Charles Oman writes "On that misty October 14th morning, at Sobral, the Napoleonic tide attained its highest watermark." Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum
The Leonel Trindade Municipal Museum is an archaeological and historical museum in the town and municipality of Torres Vedras, Lisbon District, Portugal. It is located in a former convent (Convento da Graça) on the southern edge of the city centre. In addition to an extensive archaeological section dating back to late- Palaeolithic times, the museum contains works of art from local churches as well as an exhibition relating to the Lines of Torres Vedras, defensive lines constructed under the orders of the British Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, Duke of Wellington to defend against French invasion during the Peninsular War.
