Fort Maginnis
Fort Maginnis was established during the Indian wars in the Department of Dakota by the U.S. Army. It was the last of five forts: Fort Keogh, Keogh (1876), Fort Custer (Montana), Custer (1877), Fort Missoula, Missoula (1877), Fort Assinniboine, Assinniboine (1879), and Maginnis (1880) - built following the defeat of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer, George A. Custer by Native Americans at the Battle of Little Bighorn in June, 1876. History Fort Maginnis was established in 1880, 4 1/2 miles east of Maiden, Montana Territory, (now a ghost town) by companies of the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Regiment (United States) under the command of Captain Daingerfield Parker. Martin Maginnis
Martin Maginnis (October 27, 1841 – March 27, 1919) was a nineteenth-century politician, soldier, publisher, editor and miner from Minnesota and the Montana Territory. Origins and early life Maginnis was born in 1841 on his family's farm near Pultneyville, Wayne County, New York, to Patrick and Winnifred Devine Maginnis. His parents came from Ireland, his father from County Clare and his mother from Galway, and they met and married in Liverpool, England. After mixed success in business, Patrick and Winifred Maginnis immigrated to the United States in 1838 and settled in Wayne County, New York. Patrick worked as a contractor on the New York Central Railway. In 1851, the Maginnis family moved west to LaSalle, Illinois where Patrick worked on the Illinois Central railroad. The Territory of Montana was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from May 26, 1864, until November 8, 1889, when it was admitted as the 41st state in the Union as the state of Montana. Original boundaries The Montana Territory was organized out of the existing Idaho Territory by Act of Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 26, 1864. The areas east of the Continental Divide had been previously part of the Nebraska Territory and Dakota Territory and had been acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. Abraham And Mary Walton Hogeland House
The Abraham and Mary Walton Hogeland House, at 620 W. Montana St. in Lewistown, Montana, was built in c. 1900. It has also been known as the Frank and OlaMay Hogeland House. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It is an L-shaped two-story building with a gable-front and wing, and an intersecting gable roof. It was originally covered with wood clapboard, but front and sides were covered with asbestos shingle siding in 1942. It has boxed eaves, with full gable returns and raking molding. It occupies a corner lot; its gable front faces southeast onto W. Montana St.; its southwest side is along 7th Ave. The southwest side has two dormers breaking the roofline, and another dormer faces southeast from the wing which extends to the northeast. Wounded Knee Massacre
The Wounded Knee Massacre, also known as the Battle of Wounded Knee, involved nearly three hundred Lakota people killed by soldiers of the United States Army. More than 250 people of the Lakota were killed and 51 wounded (4 men and 47 women and children, some of whom died later). Some estimates placed the number of dead as high as 300. Twenty-five U.S. soldiers also were killed and 39 were wounded (six of the wounded later died). Nineteen soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor specifically for Wounded Knee, and overall 31 for the campaign. Open Range
In the Western United States and Canada, open range is rangeland where cattle roam freely regardless of land ownership. Where there are "open range" laws, those wanting to keep animals off their property must erect a fence to keep animals out; this applies to public roads as well. Land in open range that is designated as part of a "herd district" reverses liabilities, requiring an animal's owner to fence it in or otherwise keep it on the person's own property. Most eastern states and jurisdictions in Canada require owners to fence in or herd their livestock.
