Fort Benjamin Harrison Historic District
Fort Benjamin Harrison was a U.S. Army post located in suburban Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana, northeast of Indianapolis, between 1906 and 1991. It is named for the 23rd United States president, Benjamin Harrison. History In 1901, Russell Harrison, the son of former U.S. president Benjamin Harrison, facilitated the sale of a U.S. Arsenal near downtown Indianapolis. The U.S. Army used the proceeds to buy land in 1903 in a more remote area, where the fort is located today. Secretary of War Elihu Root named the post for President Benjamin Harrison in honor of Harrison's hometown. Fort Benjamin Harrison saw its highest levels of activity during World War I and World War II. The Fort Benjamin Harrison Reception Center (for inducting draftees) opened in 1941 and by 1943 was the largest reception center in the United States. Lawrence Township, Marion County, Indiana
Lawrence Township is one of nine townships in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 122,321 at the 2020 census, up from 118,447 at the 2010 United States Census. Lawrence Township was organized in 1822. The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township provides services to students in portions of Lawrence Township and the city of Lawrence. The Defense Information School (DINFOS) is a United States Department of Defense (DoD) school located at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. DINFOS fulfills the Department of Defense's need for an internal corps of professional journalists, broadcasters, and public affairs professionals. Fort Jackson is a United States Army installation, which TRADOC operates on for Basic Combat Training (BCT), and is located within the city of Columbia, South Carolina. This installation is named for Andrew Jackson, a United States Army general and the seventh president of the United States (1829–1837) who was born in the border region of North and South Carolina. The United States Army Financial Management School is in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Its mission is to provide the United States Army with military and civilian leaders trained in financial management, and develop complementary concepts, doctrine, and organization for financial management in support of American armed forces. Students take classes and train in subjects such as advanced accounting, financial analysis, accounts payable and disbursing operations, and auditing. The Adjutant General School and the Soldier Support Institute (SSI) are located at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. The school was formerly located at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, until its closure. Selfridge Air National Guard Base or Selfridge ANGB is an Air National Guard installation located in Harrison Township, Michigan, near Mount Clemens. Selfridge Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entry into World War I in April 1917. Stout Army Air Field is located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. It serves as the Joint Forces Headquarters of the Indiana National Guard. History Stout Field is located west of Holt Road, north and south of Minnesota Street in west Indianapolis. Established in 1926, the airport was a stop along a transcontinental air route from New York City to Los Angeles. The airport was officially named for Lt.
