Formula (album)
''Formula'' (released 1995) is an album by industrial/metal band OLD (Old Lady Drivers). It is their last full-length to date, and the group was condensed to a duo, with James Plotkin handling all instruments and Alan Dubin handling all vocals. The album is a rather drastic departure from OLD's earlier works, abandoning much of their extreme metal roots to instead explore techno, IDM and electro, with Dubin's vocals processed through a Vocoder. According to ''Terrorizer Magazine'' (article named "Lost Classics & Follies"), it is allegedly the lowest-selling album in the history of Earache Records. Though not well received at the time of its release, retrospective reviews are more positive. Allmusic referred to the album as a notable precursor of industrial techno. OLD (band)
OLD (originally an acronym for Old Lady Drivers) was an American heavy metal music, heavy metal band from Bergenfield, New Jersey, formed in 1986 and signed to Earache Records. It featured Alan Dubin on vocals, and James Plotkin on guitars and programming; they later formed the experimental doom metal band Khanate (band), Khanate. History OLD formed from the remains of Plotkin's previous band, the short-lived grindcore act "Regurgitation". OLD's first album, entitled "Old Lady Drivers", continued in the humorous style of grindcore which characterized Regurgitation's material. Alan Dubin is an American vocalist/singer most widely known for his role in drone metal band Khanate. He is noted for his tortured and distinctive vocal approach. Other bands he has been featured in include OLD and current band Gnaw. Dubin is also a professional film/video editor with many credits in TV commercials, shows, films, music videos and more. Industrial Techno
Industrial techno is a subgenre of techno and industrial dance music that originated in the 1990s. Characteristically, it incorporates influences from the bleak, noisy sound and aesthetics of early industrial music acts, particularly Cabaret Voltaire (band), Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle. Vocoder
A vocoder (, a portmanteau of ''vo''ice and en''coder'') is a category of speech coding that analyzes and synthesizes the human voice signal for audio data compression, multiplexing, voice encryption or voice transformation. The vocoder was invented in 1938 by Homer Dudley at Bell Labs as a means of synthesizing human speech. This work was developed into the channel vocoder which was used as a voice codec for telecommunications for speech coding to conserve bandwidth in transmission. By encrypting the control signals, voice transmission can be secured against interception. Its primary use in this fashion is for secure radio communication.
