Formosat-8
Formosat-8 is a planned constellation of Taiwanese earth observation satellites. The Taiwan Space Agency expects to launch the first satellite in 2025. History The program builds off of Formosat-5, a remote imaging satellite which was launched in 2017. In 2024 it was announced that the domestic parts would make up 80% of the satellites. The Formosat-8 program was praised by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te during a May 2025 visit to the program office. The first launch is planned for October, 2025 via SpaceX. Payloads Six of eight satellites are planned to fly high resolution optical payloads with less than 1m resolution and two satellites are planned to fly at a lower 1m resolution. Formosat-5
Formosat-5 (Formosa Satellite 5; ) is the first Earth observation satellite manufactured and operated solely by the National Space Organization, the national civilian space agency of Taiwan. The satellite was launched from a Falcon 9 rocket on 24 August 2017, and placed into a Sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of about 720 km. Formosat-5 can capture color and more detailed monochrome images, along with measuring the ionosphere plasma's properties. Spacecraft design Formosat-5 primary goal is to demonstrate Taiwan's satellite manufacturing capabilities and produce data for various academic research. The satellite is 2.8 m tall, 1.6 m wide octagonal prism body, and weighs about 450 kg. Formosat-5 contains the Optical Telemetry Payload () capturing color and monochrome images, and the Advanced Ionospheric Sounder () measuring the ionosphere. COSMIC-2
COSMIC-2 also known as FORMOSAT-7, is the constellation of satellites for meteorology, ionosphere, climatology, and space weather research. FORMOSAT-7 is a joint US-Taiwanese project including National Space Organization (NSPO) on the Taiwanese side and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the United States Air Force (USAF) on the US side. FORMOSAT-7 is the successor of FORMOSAT-3 The six satellites of the constellation were launched 25 June 2019 on a Falcon Heavy rocket. They reached their designated mission orbits in February 2021, after eighteen months of gradual orbital adjustments. Full operational capability was achieved in October 2021. Lai Ching-te (; pinyin: ''Lài Qīngdé''; born 6 October 1959), also known as William Lai, is a Taiwanese politician and former physician who is currently serving as the eighth president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since May 2024. He is the third member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to assume the office of president and the first whose predecessor was also a DPP member.
