Forest Avenue
Forest Avenue (formerly known as Green Street; colloquially known as Forest Ave) is a major street in Portland, Maine, United States. It runs for around from Bridgton Road in the northwest to Congress Street, in downtown Portland, in the southeast. It is the main artery for traffic entering and leaving Portland to and from the north via city streets. The street ends in Portland's Arts District. Forest Avenue is part of U.S. Route 302 for almost its entire course. US 302 reaches its eastern terminus at Forest Avenue's interchange with Interstate 295 (I-295) and U.S. Route 1 at the southern end of Back Cove. Route Forest Avenue picks up the U.S. Route 302 designation from Bridgton Road at the crossing of the Presumpscot River at the border between Westbrook and the Riverton area of Portland. Oakhurst Dairy is a company in the dairy industry that sells mostly milk products, as well as juices. It was founded in 1918, and is headquartered in Portland, Maine. History The company's earliest predecessor was a dairy farm founded in 1902 by Arthur Leadbetter, located in Portland. The name was changed to Oakhurst in 1918, and in 1921 Stanley Bennett, who had been employed to manage the operation in 1920, bought the farm with financing from a local businessman, Nathan Cushman. At the time, Oakhurst delivered its milk via horse-drawn wagons over two routes. By 1923, the company had expanded to deliver milk over twelve routes and in 1929 there were 28 routes, including two dedicated to selling milk wholesale. The Great Lost Bear
The Great Lost Bear is a bar and restaurant at 540 Forest Avenue in Portland, Maine, United States. Established in 1979 by Dave and Weslie Evans and Chip MacConnell, it is noted for its selection of draft craft beers. History Its location was formerly occupied by a rock club named Bottoms Up and, in the rear of the buildings, Nappi's Bakery. The new venture, originally named The Grizzly Bear, opened on June 18, 1979, and it received no customers. Baxter Woods
Mayor Baxter Woods Park is a nature reserve and municipal forest in the Deering Center neighborhood of Portland, Maine, USA. The land which became Baxter Woods was owned by Congressman Francis Ormand Jonathan Smith. He died in 1876 and his estate sold the forest to canning magnate, land developer, and future Mayor James Phinney Baxter in 1882. When J.P. Baxter died in 1921, it had not been developed during the preceding building boom and was bequeathed to his son Percival P. Baxter.
