Foreigners Everywhere
''Foreigners Everywhere'', curated by Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa, was the main art exhibition of the 2024 Venice Biennale, 60th Venice Biennale, which took place from April 20–November 24, 2024. Pedrosa's stated intention for the exhibit was to investigate the idea of living on the margins, whether as an outsider, a new arrival, or an Indigenous person. There were 331 artists who were selected to take part, about a third more than the 2022 edition. Pedrosa has noted that a great number of the exhibiting artists are Indigenous and from the Global South, and a significant number also identify as queer. Among the most visible indigenous artists in the exhibit was the Brazilian Amazon group, Mahku - Huni Kuin Artists Movement, MAHKU (Movimento dos Artistas Huni Kuin), which created a mural covering the main exhibit hall in the Giardini area of the Biennale. Giardini Della Biennale
The Venice Giardini or Giardini della Biennale is an area of parkland in the historic city of Venice which hosts the Venice Biennale Art Festival, a major part of the city's cultural Biennale. The gardens were created by Napoleon Bonaparte who drained an area of marshland in order to create a public garden on the banks of the Bacino di San Marco which is a narrow stretch of water dividing the gardens from St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace. The gardens contain 30 permanent pavilions. Each pavilion is allocated to a particular nation and displays works of art by its nationals during the Venice Biennale. Several of the pavilions were designed by leading architects of the 20th century, including Carlo Scarpa and Alvar Aalto. 2024 Venice Biennale Giardini Interior 1
4 (four) is a number, numeral and digit. It is the natural number following 3 and preceding 5. It is a square number, the smallest semiprime and composite number, and is considered unlucky in many East Asian cultures. Evolution of the Hindu-Arabic digit Brahmic numerals represented 1, 2, and 3 with as many lines. 4 was simplified by joining its four lines into a cross that looks like the modern plus sign. The Shunga would add a horizontal line on top of the digit, and the Kshatrapa and Pallava evolved the digit to a point where the speed of writing was a secondary concern. The Arabs' 4 still had the early concept of the cross, but for the sake of efficiency, was made in one stroke by connecting the "western" end to the "northern" end; the "eastern" end was finished off with a curve. Aravani Art Project
Aravani Art Project is an Indian public art collective, run by trans and cis women. Initiated by Bangalore-based artist Poornima Sukumar, the project brings together people from the transgender community who paint murals inspired by their lives and experiences, in and around public spaces in the city. The project is named after the annual Aravani Festival that takes place in the Koothandavar Temple, Tamil Nadu, where thousands of members from the transgender community assemble to perform the rituals of being married to Lord Aravan. While it began locally in Bangalore in the year 2016, the members of the project have traveled to different parts of India and Sri Lanka in their mission to spread awareness and reclaim public spaces through the medium of art. Claudia Andujar
Claudia Andujar (born 1931) is a Swiss-born Brazilian photographer and activist. She co-founded the ''Comissão Pró-Yanomami'' (CCPY), an advocacy organization that supports the rights of the Yanomami people. Her work is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate in the UK. Early life and education The daughter of a Hungarian Jewish father (Siegfried Haas) and a Swiss mother (Germaine Guye Haas), she was born Claudine Haas in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. She grew up in the city of Oradea, which changed hands between the kingdoms of Hungary and Romania. Towards the end of World War II, she and her mother took refuge in Switzerland. Her father died in the Dachau concentration camp, and the rest of her father's family died either at Dachau or Auschwitz. She studied humanities at Hunter College in New York City. Giulia Andreani, born in Venice in 1985, is an Italian artist who lives and works in Paris. She is represented bGalerie Max Hetzler Education Andreani graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 2008. She continued her studies in the history of art, graduating with a master's degree in contemporary art from Paris IV-Sorbonne University in 2010. Aloïse Corbaz
Aloïse Blanche Corbaz (28 June 1886 – 5 April 1964) was a Swiss outsider artist included in Jean Dubuffet's initial collection of psychiatric art. She is one of very few acclaimed female outsider artists. Life Aloïse Blanche Corbaz was born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1886. She earned her baccalauréat in 1906. Although she dreamt of becoming a singer, Aloïse worked as a dressmaker until leaving for Germany in 1911. She eventually found work as a teacher and a governess, in Potsdam, at the court of German Kaiser Wilhelm II. While there, she developed an obsessive romantic passion for the Kaiser. The start of World War I necessitated Aloïse's return to Switzerland. Rafa Al-Nasiri
Rafa al-Nasiri (b.1940 Tikrit, Iraq -7 December 2013 Amman, Jordan) was an Iraqi painter, draughtsman, print-maker, educator and author whose works with a social and political message resonated with the Iraqi public in the mid-20th century. He was also very influential in encouraging young artists to take up print-making. Life and career Born in Tikrit, Iraq, Rafa al-Nasiri received his early art education at Baghdad’s Institute of Fine Arts, attaining a Diploma in Painting in 1959. He then pursued his training in print-making by attending Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts in China (1959-1963). Affandi (18 May 1907 – 23 May 1990) was an Indonesian artist. Born in Cirebon, West Java, as the son of R. Koesoema, who was a surveyor at a local sugar factory, Affandi finished his upper secondary school in Jakarta. He gave up his studies to pursue his desire to become an artist. Beginning in 1934, Affandi began teaching himself how to paint. He married Maryati, a fellow artist. One of his children, Kartika also became an artist. Early life Affandi was born in 1907, in Cirebon. His father was R. Koesoemah. When he was a child, his father wanted him to be a doctor; however, Affandi was interested in drawing. Sandy Adsett
Raymond Henry "Sandy" Adsett (born 27 August 1939) is a New Zealand visual artist and educator. He is acknowledged for championing the art of kōwhaiwhai painting, creating a context for the artform within the development of contemporary Māori art. In 2020 Adsett was honoured by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand with an Icon Whakamana Hiranga award "for his profound impact on the Māori community and Māori arts education system within Aotearoa." Etel Adnan (; 24 February 1925 – 14 November 2021) was a Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist. Pacita Barsana Abad (October 5, 1946 – December 7, 2004) was a Filipino-born American Ivatan self-taught visual artist. Her more than 30-year painting career began when she traveled to the United States to undertake graduate studies in Spain.
