Foreign-born Japanese
A foreign-born Japanese is a Japanese person of foreign descent or heritage, who was born outside Japan and later acquired Japanese citizenship. This category encompasses persons of both Japanese and non-Japanese descent. The former subcategory is considered because of intricacies of national and international laws regarding the citizenship of newborn persons. Dual nationality is not recognized in Japan. Under Japanese nationality law, people who acquire dual nationality before the age of 20 must choose a single nationality before reaching age 22, and people who acquire dual nationality after the age of 20 must choose a single nationality within 2 years. Citizenship
Citizenship is a membership and allegiance to a sovereign state. Though citizenship is often conflated with nationality in today's English-speaking world, international law does not usually use the term ''citizenship'' to refer to nationality; these two notions are conceptually different dimensions of collective membership. Generally citizenships have no expiration and allow persons to work, reside and vote in the polity, as well as identify with the polity, possibly acquiring a passport. Though through discriminatory laws, like disfranchisement and outright apartheid, citizens have been made second-class citizens. William Adams (sailor, Born 1564)
, better known in Japan as , was an English navigator who, in 1600, became the first Englishman to reach Japan. Donald Keene
Donald Lawrence Keene (June 18, 1922 – February 24, 2019) was an American-born Japanese scholar, historian, teacher, writer and translator of Japanese literature. Keene was University Professor emeritus and Shincho Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature at Columbia University, where he taught for over fifty years. Soon after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, he retired from Columbia, moved to Japan permanently, and acquired citizenship under the name Kīn Donarudo (キーン ドナルド) which is essentially his birth name in the Japanese name order. Marutei Tsurunen
is a Japanese politician. Born in Finland, he is the first foreign-born Japanese of European origin to serve as a member of the Diet of Japan. He is a member of the Democratic Party of Japan, where he served as Director General of the International Department. He served in the House of Councillors from 2001 to 2013. Early life Tsurunen was born Martti Turunen in the village of Höntönvaara in Lieksa, Finland, and grew up in nearby Jaakonvaara. Near the end of the Continuation War, Tsurunen (then four years old) and his family were among the few survivors of a Soviet partisan attack on the village. Marcos Sugiyama
Marcos Sugiyama (born Marcos Almeida Esteves, 16 November 1973) is a Brazilian and former Japanese volleyball player. He played for the Japanese volleyball team, Sakai Blazers, Suntory Sunbirds and Toyoda Gosei Trefuerza. He obtained his Japanese citizenship in 2003. He started practicing volleyball at just 8 years old at Dom Lucio State School and became a professional athlete at 17 years old and ended his professional volleyball career at 42 years old. He was known as The Father of Puroresu (professional wrestling), and was one of the most influential persons in professional wrestling history.
