Football In Madagascar
Football is, along with Rugby union, one of the most popular sports in the African island nation of Madagascar. The sport is governed in the country by the Malagasy Football Federation. International Madagascar's national football team, nicknamed the Barea, has not had great success internationally having never qualified for a FIFA World Cup. They have performed well in some minor competitions however, advancing to the semifinals in the COSAFA Cup (contested between national teams from Southern Africa) in 2008 and winning the football portion of the Indian Ocean Games twice. Some of the country's best players have played professionally overseas, mostly in France. Malagasy Football Federation
The Malagasy Football Federation (french: Fédération Malagasy de Football, FMF) is the governing body of football in Madagascar. It was founded in 1961, affiliated to FIFA in 1964 and to CAF in 1963. It organizes the national football league and the national team. On 19 March 2008, the FMF was suspended by FIFA. On 19 May 2008, the suspension was lifted. Toamasina
Toamasina (), meaning "like salt" or "salty", unofficially and in French Tamatave, is the capital of the Atsinanana region on the east coast of Madagascar on the Indian Ocean. The city is the chief seaport of the country, situated northeast of its capital and biggest city Antananarivo. In 2018 Toamasina had a population of 325,857. Mahamasina Municipal Stadium
Kianja Barea Mahamasina is a rugby union and football ( multi-purpose) stadium, also used for concerts and athletics, in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Usage It is used mostly for rugby and football matches. The stadium has a 40,880 capacity for football and rugby matches. Incidents In 2005, the stadium was the site of a stampede that killed two people during a match between South African side Kaizer Chiefs and Madagascar's USJF Ravinala. It was also the stadium of the 2007 Indian Ocean Games. On 26 June 2016, during a free concert, a bomb detonated in the stadium, killing two people and injuring around 80. The Pro League Championnat de Football National Division 1 (known as Orange Pro League Madagascar for sponsorship reasons) is the premier football league in Madagascar. Prior to 2019, it was known as the Three Horses Beer-sponsored THB Champions League. Format 1962-2019: The competition is played in a round-robin format between the 24 qualifying clubs from the 22 regional leagues in the country. In the first round, the teams are divided into four groups of six teams, with each team playing the others once, and with the top three clubs of each group advancing to the next round. AS ADEMA is a Malagasy football club based in Antananarivo, Madagascar. They have won the THB Champions League championship on three occasions, in 2002, 2006 and 2012. In 2002 they also advanced to the quarterfinals of the CAF Cup before losing to Al-Masry of Egypt. Ajesaia is a Malagasy football club based in Antananarivo, Madagascar. The team won the Coupe de Madagascar in 2006, qualifying them for the Super Coupe de Madagascar (which they lost 1–0 to AS Adema) and the CAF Confederation Cup (where they beat Curepipe Starlight SC of Mauritius in the first round, but lost to Ismaily SC of Egypt in the second). Antananarivo ( French: ''Tananarive'', ), also known by its colonial shorthand form Tana, is the capital and largest city of Madagascar.
