Association football is the most popular sport in Tuvalu. Football in Tuvalu is governed by the Tuvalu National Football Association (TNFA). The TNFA became an associate member association of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) on 15 November 2006 with a further reinstatement on 16 March 2020. The TNFA has been wanting to become a full member of the OFC and a member of FIFA since 1987. History of the sport The earliest records of football in Tuvalu date back to the 1979 South Pacific Games where Tuvalu competed. They defeated Tonga, but lost their other two matches. This qualified them for a play-off against Kiribati, which they would win on penalties before losing to Guam national football team. A league was active by 1980, with Nauti FC being founded in that year, and it would continue until 1991 when renovations prevented access to the airstrip for training or the Tuvalu Sports Ground for matches. Tuvalu Islands Football Association
The Tuvalu Islands Football Association (TIFA) is the governing body of football in Tuvalu. The association is responsible for the Tuvalu national football team and the Tuvalu national futsal team. Tuvalu is not a full member and is not affiliated with FIFA. It does not compete in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers because of its non-affiliation. Football in Tuvalu is played at club and national team level. The association is a member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) but not affiliated to FIFA. The association has been wanting to be a member of FIFA since 1987. However the lack of football facilities in Tuvalu is a major obstacle membership of FIFA. Tuvalu does not have a stadium, or training grounds or hotels for visiting teams and supporters. The 2011 Pacific Games men's football tournament was the 13th edition of Pacific Games men's football tournament. The competition was held in New Caledonia from 27 August to 9 September 2011 with the final played at the Stade Numa-Daly in Nouméa. Twelve men's teams competed at the Games. The Tuvalu national football team is the international football team of Tuvalu. Football in Tuvalu is played at the club and international level. Foppe De Haan
Foppe Geert de Haan (, born 26 June 1943) is a Dutch football coach. He is known for his long association with Frisian club Heerenveen. De Haan was the manager of the Tuvalu national team during 2011 and then rejoined Heerenveen's youth programme. He is also a politician for the Partij van de Arbeid. Career De Haan was born in Lippenhuizen, Friesland. He started his managerial career in 1974 with VV Akkrum. After two years, he combined this role with the youth team manager's position at Heerenveen. By 1978, he had become the manager for Drachtster Boys. He then moved to ACV in 1980, and to Steenwijk in 1983. In 1985, de Haan re-joined Heerenveen, this time as an assistant coach. He continued to spend the next 20 years with the club—the longest time a coach worked for a Dutch professional football club. De Haan was promoted to become the head coach in 1992. Tapugao Falefou
Dr. Tapugao Falefou (born 1968) is a career public servant from Tuvalu. He took up his post as the Permanent Representative to the United Nations on 13 February 2023. He later presented his credentials as Tuvalu's ambassador to the United States. On 15 April 2023, Dr. Falefou presented his credentials as Tuvalu's ambassador to Cuba. Education Falefou was awarded a bachelor’s degree in public administration and management from the University of the South Pacific in Vanuatu. He subsequently studied for a master’s degree in diplomacy and international public policy from the Australian National University. Apisai Ielemia
Apisai Ielemia (19 August 1955 – 19 November 2018) was a Tuvaluan politician who served as the tenth Prime Minister of Tuvalu from 2006 to 2010. He also held the role of Foreign Minister. Ielemia was returned as a member of parliament in the 2010 Tuvaluan general election. He was re-elected to parliament in the 2015 Tuvaluan general election. On 5 October 2016 Chief Justice Sweeney of the High Court of Tuvalu declared that Ielemia’s parliamentary seat was vacant as he was not qualified to be a member of parliament, as the consequence of the short time the opposition MP served time in jail following his conviction on 6 May 2016 in the Magistrate’s Court of charges of abuse of office during the final year of his term as prime minister (August 2006 to September 2010).
