Football Championship Subdivision
The NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), formerly known as Division I-AA, is the second-highest level of college football in the United States, after the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Sponsored by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the FCS level comprises List of NCAA Division I FCS football programs, 129 teams in 13 conferences as of the 2024 NCAA Division I FCS football season, 2024 season. The FCS designation is relevant only for football; members of the subdivision compete in NCAA Division I in all other sports. 1978 NCAA Division I-AA Football Season
The 1978 NCAA Division I-AA football season was the first season of NCAA Division I-AA, Division I-AA college football. Division I-AA was created in January 1978 when NCAA Division I, Division I was subdivided into NCAA Division I-A, Division I-A and Division I-AA for football only. It was anticipated that 65 Division I football schools would transition to Division I-AA. Instead, just eight programs (seven teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which had just joined Division I a year before, plus independent Northwestern State Demons football, Northwestern State) voluntarily opted for Division I-AA for the 1978 season. Mid-American Conference
The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a collegiate List of NCAA conferences, athletic conference with a membership base in the Great Lakes region (North America), Great Lakes region that stretches from Western New York to Illinois. Ohio Valley Conference
The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. The Northeast Conference (NEC) is a collegiate athletic conference whose schools are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference
The Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference, formerly the Colonial Athletic Association Football Conference, branded as CAA Football, is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I whose full members are located in East Coast states, from Maine to North Carolina.
