Folsom Depot
Folsom Depot is a former train station in Folsom, California. History The station site was established as the eastern terminal of the Sacramento Valley Railroad. The rail yard and initial station layout were engineered by Theodore Judah. Service began on February 22, 1856, as the first passenger railroad in the state. After a series of acquisitions and mergers, the facility came under the ownership of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad constructed a new station building by 1906. The depot was wired for electricity in 1909 and in 1916 the second story was added. Fire damage in 1924 and 1930 was repaired with minor alterations. The property, minus the turntable stands, were donated to the City of Folsom in 1970. In 1972, Ashland Station building of the Sacramento, Placer, and Nevada Railroad was moved to the site. Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. It is commonly known for Folsom State Prison, the song " Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash, as well as for Folsom Lake. The population was 80,454 at the 2020 census. Folsom is part of the Sacramento− Arden-Arcade−Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Folsom is named for Joseph Libbey Folsom who purchased Rancho Rio de los Americanos from the heirs of San Francisco merchant William Alexander Leidesdorff, and laid out the town called Granite City, mostly occupied by gold miners seeking their fortune in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Though few amassed a great deal of wealth, the city prospered due to Joseph Folsom's lobbying to get a railway to connect the town with Sacramento. Sacramento Valley Railroad (1852–1877)
The Sacramento Valley Railroad (SVRR) was incorporated on August 4, 1852, the first transit railroad company incorporated in California. Construction did not begin until February 1855 because of financial and right of way issues, and its first train operated on February 22, 1856. Although the oldest working railroad in the state was the Arcata and Mad River Railroad, first operational in December 15, 1854, the Sacramento Valley Railroad was the West's pioneering incorporated railroad, forerunner to the Central Pacific.
