Folkston Cutoff
The Folkston Cutoff is a railroad line in southern Georgia. It runs from Jesup southwest to Folkston, a distance of 54 miles. It was built in 1901 by the Plant System to allow trains from the northeast to Florida to bypass their busy terminal in Waycross. History In 1881, the Plant System (founded by Henry B. Plant) built its second line into Florida, the Waycross Short Line. This line ran from the Plant system's main line (the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway) at Waycross southeast to Jacksonville, Florida, which was becoming a major rail junction and shipping port. By 1893, the Plant system's competitor, the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad (FC&P) (which later became the Seaboard Air Line Railroad) completed a line running directly from Savannah, Georgia to Jacksonville. Jesup, Georgia
Jesup is a city in Wayne County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,809 at the 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Wayne County. History By February 1869, Willis Clary had begun building a two-story hotel near the junction of Macon and Brunswick Railroad and the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad and four stores had sprung up in the area. Clary became a driving force for the establishment of what would become Jesup and was its first mayor. By September 1869, the town included five stores, a sawmill, and a railroad eating house in addition to Clary's hotel. By December 1869 the community had become known as Jesup. Jesup was named for Thomas Jesup, a general during the Second Seminole War. The area was then part of Appling County, Georgia. The Brunswick and Western Railroad (known earlier as the Brunswick and Florida Railroad and the Brunswick and Albany Railroad) is a historic railroad in southern Georgia that at its greatest extent ran from Brunswick near the coast to Albany. Segments of the line still exist today. The Brunswick and Florida Railroad ran from Brunswick west to Glenmore (located about 10 miles west of present-day Waycross), where it would connect with the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. Atlanta, Birmingham And Atlantic Railway
The Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway was formed in 1914 as a reorganization of the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railroad, which had been created in 1905 to purchase the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway and extend its track into Birmingham, Alabama, from an end point at Montezuma, Georgia. The railroad's chief engineer and general manager at the time was Alexander Bonnyman. The railroad went into receivership in 1921 and was acquired by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1926. They reorganized the line as the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast Railroad. Brunswick And Birmingham Railroad
The Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad (B&B) was a railroad in southeastern United States. It was chartered on December 11, 1900. In 1902–03, it built a line from Brunswick, Georgia to Offerman, Georgia and a line from Bushnell, Georgia to Ocilla, Georgia. The B&B purchased the Offerman and Western Railroad on July 1, 1902, and the Ocilla and Irwinville Railroad on February 19, 1903. The railroad ran into financial troubles and was purchased by the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway in April 1904. The segment of the line built between Birmingham, Alabama and Alma, Georgia was abandoned by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1953. Folkston Railfan Platform
The Folkston Railfan Platform is located in Folkston, Georgia along CSX Transportation's Nahunta Subdivision, and provides a location where railfans can safely view and photograph trains. The Nahunta Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in Florida and Georgia. The line runs along CSX's A Line from Ogeechee, Georgia, to Dinsmore, Florida, for a total of . At its north end it continues south from the Savannah Subdivision and at its south end it continues south as the Jacksonville Terminal Subdivision A-Line.
