Foley Mountain Conservation Area
Foley Mountain Conservation Area, the highest conservation area in the Rideau Valley, overlooks Upper Rideau Lake and Westport. It features a variety of wildlife in 325 hectares (800 acres) of woods, ponds and fields. The area also has a sandy beach with changing facilities. The 300 km Rideau Trail, linking Kingston and Ottawa, passes through the conservation area. Westport, Ontario
Westport is a village in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It lies at the west end of Upper Rideau Lake, at the head of the navigable Rideau Canal system, southwest of Ottawa. The village of Westport was incorporated as an independent municipality in 1904. Surrounded by the Township of Rideau Lakes, within Leeds County, Westport is Ontario's smallest municipality (by land area). History The first settlers to the Westport area arrived in the period between 1810 and 1820. The land on which Westport now sits was originally granted by the Crown to a Mr. Hunter, but he never settled in the area and it was eventually purchased by Reuben Sherwood in 1817. Some of this land was later purchased by the Stoddard and Manhard families. The small community was known as Head of the Lake. Township Of Rideau Lakes
Rideau Lakes is a township located within Leeds and Grenville United Counties in Eastern Ontario, Canada. The township was incorporated on 1 January 1998 by amalgamating the former townships of North Crosby, South Crosby, Bastard, South Burgess and South Elmsley with the village of Newboro. Rideau Lakes lies in the northwest corner of Leeds and Grenville, and is geographically the largest municipality in the county. Farming, tourism, and service industries form the backbone of the local economy. Upper Rideau Lake
Upper Rideau Lake is located in the municipality of Rideau Lakes, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in Eastern Ontario, Canada. It is in the Saint Lawrence River Drainage Basin, and geographically the highest lake on the Rideau Canal System. Hydrology Upper Rideau Lake is the summit of the Rideau Canal system, with a surface elevation of 124.65m above sea level. Despite having the highest elevation, Upper Rideau Lake is not the top of the watershed. Water flows north to the Rideau River, there is no flow south to the Cataraqui River. Inflow is from Westport Sand Lake, part of the Rideau Lake Subwatershed. Outflow, through the Narrows Lock, is to the Big Rideau Lake, which eventually flows to the Saint Lawrence River via the Ottawa River. Rideau Valley Conservation Authority
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is an inter-municipal environmental protection and advisory agency that works with local municipalities, government agencies, special interest groups and the general public to protect the natural resources of the Rideau River watershed. The watershed drains an area of over 4,000 square kilometres of eastern Ontario and includes towns such as Portland, Perth, Smith Falls, Merrickville, Kemptville, and Manotick. About 620,000 live in the watershed, mostly deriving from the City of Ottawa.
