Fola Francis
Fola Francis (18 March 1994 – 20 December 2023) was a Nigerian transgender model, LGBTQIA+ activist and entrepreneur. In 2022, she became the first trans model to walk the Lagos Fashion Week runway for Cute-Saint and Fruché. Her debut on the runway had ripple effects, with the Lagos Fashion Week's team deciding not to post any of her pictures. Career and activism Francis started her brand, Fola Francis, in 2018 as a way to deal with trauma from being kitoed. Before then, she worked as a blogger and TV producer in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Kito (slang)
Kito is a slang term used in Nigeria to refer to the act of extorting money or other valuables from gay men by threatening to expose or out them to their families, friends, or community. It is a form of homophobic violence that is often used to control and intimidate gay men. History The term kito is thought to have originated in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria. It is believed to be a contraction of the words "ka sha kunya" which means "you should be ashamed." In 2014, the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act was passed, which criminalizes same-sex marriage and other forms of same-sex intimacy. However, this law has been criticized for being discriminatory and for exposing gay people to violence. The Ballroom scene (also known as the Ballroom community, Ballroom culture, or just Ballroom) is an African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture. The scene traces its origins to the drag balls of the mid-19th century United States, such as those hosted by William Dorsey Swann, a formerly enslaved Black man in Washington D.C.. By the early 20th century, integrated drag balls were popular in cities such as New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Baltimore, and Philadelphia. In the mid-20th century, as a response to racism in integrated drag spaces, the balls evolved into house ballroom, where Black and Latino attendees could "walk" in a variety of categories for trophies and cash prizes. Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim
Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim (born 1989) is a Nigerian film producer, screenwriter and filmmaker, who creates works which tell the stories of Nigeria's marginalised LGBTQ communities. In 2020, the BBC included her in its list of the 100 Women of the Year. Biography Ikpe-Etim was born in 1989. She is co-founder of the production company Hashtag Media House, and since 2011, she has worked to give voice to the Nigeria's minority communities, especially the LGBTQ community there. Uzoma Odimara, popularly known as Area Scatter, was a cross-dressing performer who gained popularity in the post-Nigerian Civil War era of the 1970s in Imo State, Eastern Nigeria. Early life Area Scatter was born in Imo State, South East Nigeria; but the date of birth is unknown, as little is known about Area Scatter's early life. Career Scatter was reportedly a civil servant during the years of the Nigerian Civil War. Towards the end of the civil war, she disappeared into the woods and the reasons for her disappearance remain very elusive thus, adding an aura of intrigue to her narrative.
