Flying Circus (wargame)
''Flying Circus'', subtitled "Tactical Aerial Combat, 1915–1918", is a board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1972 that simulates aerial combat during World War I. Background Early in World War I, generals of all armies realized the strategic importance of reconnaissance aircraft that could provide intelligence on enemy movements. They also realized that for the same reason, it was important to destroy enemy reconnaissance aircraft. Scouts (also known as "fighters") quickly became armed with machine guns, both to shoot down enemy reconnaissance aircraft and to defend their own from enemy scouts. Over the Western Front, small groups of scouts gradually increased in size. One German squadron, the ''Jagdgeschwader'' I, commanded by Manfred von Richthofen , was nicknamed the "Flying Circus" because of the bright colors of its aircraft. ''JagdPanther'' is a game magazine that was published from 1973 to 1976. Publication history In 1973, Texas Tech student Stephen V. Cole started playing ''PanzerBlitz'', a tactical-level World War II wargame published by Avalon Hill. Cole grew so enamored of the game that he conceived of a series of variants and expansions that he called "PanzerBlitz Unlimited". In order to provide a forum for this, he founded the company JagdPanther Publications to produce the fanzine ''JagdPanther'', dedicated to ''PanzerBlitz'' and other World War II wargames. The Wargamer (magazine)
''The Wargamer'' was a magazine devoted to the hobby of board wargaming. Originally published as a British bimonthly magazine by UK Wargamers in 1977, it was subsequently published by World Wide Wargames, which then moved to the United States. The magazine ceased publication in 1990. History Keith Poulter, a political science teacher in England, became interested in board wargames in 1975, and decided to produce a wargaming magazine as a hobby. ''Phoenix'' was a magazine primarily focussed on board wargames. It was published in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s by Simpubs Ltd., the British subsidiary of American game company Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). History In 1974, SPI started to ship some of their wargames to J.D. Bardsley in the UK, who acted as a sales representative using the name SP/UK. ''Moves'' was a wargaming magazine originally published by SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.), which also published manual wargames. Their flagship magazine '' Strategy & Tactics'' (''S&T''), was a military history magazine featuring a new wargame in each issue. While S&T was devoted to historical articles, ''Moves'' focused on the play of the games. Don Turnbull was a journalist, editor, games designer, and an accomplished piano and pinball player.
