Florika Fink-Hooijer
Florika Fink-Hooijer is a European civil servant at the European Commission. She leads the Directorate General for the Environment, which holds large responsibilities under the European Green Deal. She joined the European Commission in 1990 and has held various high level management posts in the area of external and security policy, humanitarian aid, disaster risk reduction and environmental protection. Early life and education Fink-Hooijer was born in Darmstadt, Germany and grew up in Berlin. She studied law at the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universität Bonn, and the Université de Lausanne before completing a master's degree in International and Comparative Law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. She later earned a PhD in copyright at the Free University of Berlin with a dissertation on the subject of immediate termination in copyright contract law. Ebola Crisis
The 2013–2016 epidemic of Ebola virus disease, centered in Western Africa, was the most widespread outbreak of the disease in history. It caused major loss of life and socioeconomic disruption in the region, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The first cases were recorded in Guinea in December 2013; later, the disease spread to neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone, with minor outbreaks occurring in Nigeria and Mali. Kimberley Process Certification Scheme
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) is the process established in 2003 to prevent "conflict diamonds" from entering the mainstream rough diamond market by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 following recommendations in the Fowler Report. The process was set up "to ensure that diamond purchases were not financing violence by rebel movements and their allies seeking to undermine legitimate governments." The effectiveness of the process has been brought into question by organizations such as Global Witness (pulled out of the scheme on 5 December 2011) and IMPACT (pulled out on 14 December 2017), claiming it has failed in its purpose and does not provide markets with assurance that the diamonds are not conflict diamonds.
