Flores Giant Rat
The Flores giant rat (''Papagomys armandvillei'') is a rodent of the family Muridae that occurs on the island of Flores in Indonesia. It has been recorded in Rutong Protection Forest. The species is found in primary, secondary and disturbed forest over a wide range of elevations. Its head and body length is and its tail length is . These dimensions are about twice as large as those of a typical brown rat (''Rattus norvegicus''), which suggests about eight times the body mass. The body mass has been estimated at , comparable to a rabbit. ''Papagomys armandvillei'' is the only extant species in the genus ''Papagomys,'' with another smaller species, '' Papagomys theodorverhoeveni'', known from subfossil remains. The specific epithet, armandvillei, honours the Dutch Jesuit missionary Cornelis J. F. le Cocq d'Armandville (1846–1896) who was stationed in the Dutch East Indies, and later in New Guinea. Fredericus Anna Jentink (20 August 1844, Wymbritseradeel – 4 November 1913, Leiden)Fredericus Anna Jentink (1844 - 1913). In: Notes from the Leyden Museum Vol. 36, 1913. p 254 was a Dutch zoologist. The molars or molar teeth are large, flat teeth at the back of the mouth. They are more developed in mammals. They are used primarily to grind food during chewing. Island gigantism, or insular gigantism, is a biological phenomenon in which the size of an animal species isolated on an island increases dramatically in comparison to its mainland relatives. ''Homo floresiensis'' , also known as "Flores Man" or "Hobbit" (after Hobbit, the fictional species), is an Extinction, extinct species of small archaic humans that inhabited the island of Flores, Indonesia, until the arrival of Homo sapiens, modern humans about 50,000 years ago. Guy Musser
Guy Graham Musser (August 10, 1936 – October 2019) was an American zoologist. His main research was in the field of the rodent subfamily Murinae, in which he has described many new species. Musser was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended elementary and secondary public schools until 1955 and in 1967 obtained a PhD at the University of Michigan with a thesis about the taxonomy of the Mexican gray squirrel (''Sciurus aureogaster''). In 1966 he joined the American Museum of Natural History where he became curator of mammals. Since his retirement in 2002 he is curator emeritus. In the 1960s and 1970s he published numerous articles on squirrels, Neotominae and Murinae. In the 1970s he conducted a three-year expedition to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi where he discovered several new mice and rat species.
