Flo Ware
Florasina Ware (December 7, 1912 - 1981) was an American activist, radio show host, and foster mother in Seattle, Washington. Ware led a number of campaigns in Seattle to improve living conditions for children, the elderly and the poor. She pressed school officials in the Central Area schools to improve the academic programmes, and later became an organizer of the Central Area School Board. She called for quality care for aged people and led the Meals on Wheels program in the city. She also called for more employment support for the poor. Ware was involved with the Foster Parent Association and raised 20 foster children in her home. From 1968 to 1979 she hosted a radio talk show on Seattle station KRAB (Seattle), KRAB. In 1968 she led a group of around 50 indigenous and black people in a convoy of buses to Washington, D.C., to voice grievances about their living conditions; the group became known as the Poor People's Campaign. Meals On Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a programme that delivers meals to individuals at home who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. The name is often used generically to refer to home-delivered meals programmes, not all of which are actually named "Meals on Wheels". Many of the housebound recipients are the elderly, and many of the volunteers are also elderly but able-bodied and able to drive automobiles. Research shows that home-delivered meal programmes significantly improve diet quality, reduce food insecurity and improve quality-of-life among the recipients. The programmes also reduce government expenditures by reducing the need of recipients to use hospitals, nursing homes or other expensive community-based services. Model Cities Program
The Model Cities Program was an element of U.S. President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty. The concept was presented by labor leader Walter Reuther to President Johnson in an off-the-record White House meeting on May 20, 1965. In 1966, new legislation led to the more than 150 five-year-long, Model Cities experiments to develop new antipoverty programs and alternative forms of municipal government. Model cities represented a new approach that emphasized social program as well as physical renewal, and sought to coordinate the actions of numerous government agencies in a multifaceted attack on the complex roots of urban poverty. Flo Ware Park
Flo Ware Park is a public park in Seattles Central District / Leschi neighborhoods, in the U.S. state of Washington. It was named for Flo Ware in 1982. Description and history The 21,600-square-foot park is located at the southeast corner of 28th Avenue South and South Jackson Street. The city purchased the land for $46,000 in 1969, and the park was named after the African-American community activist Flo Ware in 1982. The park has a playground, a half basketball court, benches, and a lawn. The entrance has a sculpture inspired by Ware with the phrases "build community" and "get involved". Among murals at the park is ''Find Yourself Outside'', which depicts "Black people in a Pacific Northwest landscape swimming, paddleboarding, dancing, camping, and exploring the urban outdoors", according to the ''South Seattle Emerald''. Symphony station, formerly University Street station, is a light rail station that is part of the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel in Seattle, Washington, United States. The station is located under 3rd Avenue at University Street, near Benaroya Hall, and is served by Sound Transit's 1 Line. It is located between Westlake and Pioneer Square stations and has surface connections to buses operated by King County Metro and other providers. The station consists of two side platforms situated under street level, with two mezzanines connecting to the surface. It was designed in the style of high-tech architecture and includes several pieces of public art added during construction and later additions.
