Flo Oy Wong
Flo Oy Wong (; born October 28, 1938) is an American artist, curator, and educator, of Chinese-descent. She had co-founded the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) in San Francisco. Biography Flo Oy Wong was born on October 28, 1938, in Oakland, California. Wong was granted a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 1960, qualifying as a teacher at California State University, Hayward a year later. Her intent was initially to teach high school students, but she found that it was more enjoyable to teach small children, and focused on a career doing that; this ended when she had her own children and left the teaching profession. Wong began studying art in 1978, attending DeAnza College until 1980 followed by a stint at Foothill College until 1982. In 1989, she co-founded the Asian American Women Artists Association with Betty Nobue Kano, Moira Roth, and Bernice Bing. In 1990 she and Jan Rindfleisch curated the exhibition ''Families: ... Kim Anno
Kim Anno (born December 19, 1958) is a Japanese-American abstract painter. Born in Los Angeles, California to Japanese-Polish and Native American-Irish parents, respectively, she studied at San Francisco State University, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1982. She was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1985 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Anno began working at the California College of the Arts in 1996 as an associate professor, and was chair of the painting department as of 2012. Early life Kim Anno was raised next to the ocean on the west side of Los Angeles and came of age in the political flux of the 1970s. The Luggage Store Gallery, also known as 509 Cultural Center, is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary arts organization founded in 1987, and has two venues located in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The organization has sponsored many local artists, including those that are considered to be part of the Mission School, and of skateboard or street art culture. History The Luggage Store Gallery was founded by Darryl Smith and Laurie Lazer, and they serve as CO-directors. The 509 Cultural Center at 509 Ellis Street began in 1987 as an arts collective of 17 members many of which were connected to the Aarti Cooperative Hotel at 391 Leavenworth Street. United States Immigration Station, Angel Island
Angel Island Immigration Station was an immigration station in San Francisco Bay which operated from January 21, 1910 to November 5, 1940, where immigrants entering the United States were detained and interrogated. Angel Island is an island in San Francisco Bay. It is currently a State Park administered by California State Parks and a California Historical Landmark. The island was originally a fishing and hunting site for Coastal Miwok Indians, then it was a haven for Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala. Later, it was developed as a cattle ranch, then, starting with the Civil War, the island served as a U.S. Army post. During the island's Immigration Station period, the island held hundreds of thousands of immigrants, the majority from China, Japan, India, Mexico and the Philippines. The Women's Caucus for Art (WCA), founded in 1972, is a non-profit organization based in New York City, which supports women artists, art historians, students, educators, and museum professionals. The WCA holds exhibitions and conferences to promote women artists and their works and recognizes the talents of artists through their annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Since 1975 it has been a United Nations-affiliated non-governmental organization (NGO), which has broadened its influence beyond the United States. Lenore Chinn
Lenore Chinn (born June 20, 1949) is an American artist best known for her American realist paintings and her queer activism. Chinn was a founding member of Lesbians in the Visual Arts and Queer Cultural Center (QCC) and served on the San Francisco Human Rights Commission.
