Benton Flippen
James Benton Flippen (July 18, 1920 – June 28, 2011) was an old-time fiddler from Mount Airy, North Carolina. He was one of the last surviving members of a generation of performers born in the early 20th century playing in the Round Peak style centering on Surry County, North Carolina. His contemporaries included Tommy Jarrell, Fred Cockerham, Kyle Creed, and Earnest East. Flippen learned to play old-time music early in life from his father, uncles, and brothers. He composed several original tunes and performed with the Camp Creek Boys and the Smokey Valley Boys. Flippen was a recipient of the North Carolina Folk Heritage Award in 1990. Hannah Irene Flippen (born March 7, 1995) is an American softball player. She played college softball at the University of Utah, where she was a three-time All-American. Flippen is a member of for the United States women's national softball team, and competed at the 2017 World Cup of Softball. She was also chosen to play for the 2018 Japan All-Star Series and World Cup of Softball team. Early life Flippen was born on March 7, 1995, in Bonita, California to parents John and Mary Lou Flippen. Flippen's mother was an All-American at Utah State University. JayC Food Stores is an American supermarket chain based in Petersburg, Indiana. , the chain operates 64 stores in Southern Indiana. JayC has been a division of Kroger since 1999. History Early history JayC was founded in 1863 by Swiss immigrant John C. Groub, who with his wife Elizabeth opened the chain's first store on South Chestnut Street in the city of Seymour. The success of the business allowed them to move to larger premises in 1871 and add a wholesale department. Profits by 1885 had reached US$80,000. John C. Groub died in 1888, passing the management of the company to his son Theodore and his son-in-law William Masters, an experienced grocer. Theodore later handed the running of the company to his sons Thomas and John. Ruth Brooks Flippen (born Ruth Albertina Brooks; September 14, 1921 – July 9, 1981) was an American screenwriter and television writer. Life and career Born Ruth Albertina Brooks on September 14, 1921, in Brooklyn, Flippen was married to character actor Jay C. Flippen on January 4, 1947. The marriage lasted until Jay Flippen's death on February 3, 1971. Ruth Brooks Flippen died on July 9, 1981, in Marina del Rey, California. Samuel Russell Flippen (September 30, 1969 – August 18, 2006) was an American man who was executed in North Carolina for murder. Flippen was sentenced to death for the February 1994 murder of Britnie Nichole Hutton, his 2-year-old stepdaughter. Since his execution, there have been concerns raised about his conviction and whether he may have been innocent. He was convicted based on circumstantial evidence, had no criminal record, and maintained his innocence to the end. Some people opposed his execution, including Britnie Hutton's biological father. Flippen remains the most recent person executed in North Carolina.
