Austin Flint I
Austin Flint I (October 20, 1812 – March 13, 1886) was an American physician. He was a founder of Buffalo Medical College, precursor to The State University of New York at Buffalo. He served as president of the American Medical Association. Biography Flint was born at Petersham, Massachusetts, on October 20, 1812, to Joseph Henshaw Flint (1786-1846) and Hannah Willard Reed. He was educated at Amherst and Harvard and graduated at the latter in 1833. After practicing at Boston, Massachusetts, and Northampton, Massachusetts, he moved to Buffalo, New York, in 1836. He was appointed professor of the institutes and practices of medicine in Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois; resigned after one year, in 1846, and established the ''Buffalo Medical Journal''. With Doctors White and Frank Hastings Hamilton he founded the Buffalo Medical College in 1847, where he was professor of the principles and practice of medicine for six years. Valerie Irene Jane Flint (5 July 1936 – 7 January 2009) was a British scholar and historian, specialising in medieval intellectual and cultural history. Biography Early life Flint was born in Derby, England. She was a pupil at the Rutland House School; and although her family was not Catholic, Flint was also educated by the Sisters of Mercy at their Doncaster convent school. Upon winning a scholarship, she matriculated to Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford. Focusing on the 12th century, Flint studied for an MPhil under Beryl Smalley, Richard Southern, Richard Hunt and Lorenzo Minio-Paluello. Academic career Flint's D.Phil. thesis was on "The life and works of Honorius Augustodunensis with special reference to chronology and sources," and was finished in 1969. Roland Flint
Roland Henry Flint (February 27, 1934 - January 2, 2001) was an American poet and professor of English at Georgetown University. Life Born in Park River, North Dakota, he attended the University of North Dakota before joining the United States Marine Corps. He served in post-war Korea and then returned to and graduated from the University of North Dakota. He earned an M.A. in English from Marquette University and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where he wrote his dissertation on the early work of Theodore Roethke and began to publish his poetry. He was a professor of English at Georgetown University from 1968-1997 and received several university awards for his teaching. During his tenure at Georgetown, Flint received MacDowell (formerly MacDowell Colony) residency awards in 1976, 1983, and 1985. Richard Foster Flint
Richard Foster Flint (March 1, 1902 - June 6, 1976) was an American geologist. Biography He was born in Chicago on March 1, 1902. Flint graduated from the University of Chicago in 1922 and earned his Ph.D. in geology also at the University of Chicago in 1925. He then joined Yale as a member of the faculty, becoming a full professor in 1945. Flint was recognized for his leadership role in Quaternary period geology with extensive work on effects of glaciations in northeastern America. He also performed research in Washington State to understand the last ice age’s impact on the Northwest, gaining some notoriety for his opposition to the Missoula Floods hypothesis, which was posed by J Harlen Bretz. He presented a detailed and thoughtful argument against the possibility of catastrophic floods; a position which has subsequently fallen into disfavor based on a wide collection of evidence.
