The Flinders Lane Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Melbourne, Australia. It was founded in 1989. Background The gallery was founded in 1989 by Sonia Heitlinger, who often promoted Aboriginal artists from areas in the Northern Territory such as Yuendumu and Utopia. The gallery became known for showcasing art by new and Aboriginal artists. Artists exhibited by the gallery include Gloria Petyarre Gloria Petyarre (1942-2021), also known as Gloria Pitjara was born in Utopia, Northern Territory, Australia. Yuendumu
Yuendumu is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia, northwest of Alice Springs on the Tanami Road, within the Central Desert Region local government area. It ranks as one of the larger remote communities in central Australia, and has a thriving community of Aboriginal artists. It is home to Pintubi Anmatjere Warlpiri (PAW) Media, which produced the TV series '' Bush Mechanics''. History Yuendumu was established in 1946 by the Native Affairs Branch of the Australian Government to deliver rations and welfare services; the first superintendent was Francis McGarry. Utopia, Northern Territory
Utopia, also known as Urapuntja and Amengernterneah, is an Aboriginal Australian homeland area formed in November 1978 by the amalgamation of the former Utopia pastoral lease, from which it gains its name, with a tract of unalienable land to its north. It covers an area of , transected by the Sandover River, and lies on a traditional boundary of the Alyawarre and Anmatyerre people, the two Aboriginal Australian languages, Aboriginal language groups which predominate there today (85% speaking Alyawarre language, Alyawarre). It has a number of unique elements. It is one of a minority of communities created by autonomous activism in the early phase of the Indigenous land rights in Australia, land rights movement. Gloria Petyarre
Gloria Petyarre (1942-2021), also known as Gloria Pitjara was born in Utopia, Northern Territory, Australia. She was an Aboriginal Australian artist from the Anmatyerre community, just north of Alice Springs. One of her best known works is "Bush Medicine". Petyarre started as an artist in the Women's Batik Group in 1977, which was launched by the CAAMA (Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association). She continued her artwork through her paintings while also working with one of her six sisters, Kathleen Petyarre. Petyarre died on 8 June 2021 in Alice Springs. Career and artistic impacts Petyarre started her art career in the Women's Batik group and was known for Batik paint style. In 1999, she won the Wynne Prize with her piece ''Leaves'' at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
