Flatlander (short Story Collection)
''Flatlander'' () is a 1995 collection of stories by American writer Larry Niven, all set in Known Space. It is the definitive collection of all stories by Niven about Amalgamated Regional Militia, ARM agent Gil Hamilton. Many of the stories revolve around the theme of involuntary organ transplantation. The book includes the stories "Death by Ecstasy" (formerly "The Organleggers"), "The Defenseless Dead", "ARM", "The Patchwork Girl", and "The Woman in Del Rey Crater"—the only previously unpublished story in the collection. The collection is essentially a replacement for a 1976 collection called ''The Long ARM of Gil Hamilton'' () which contained only the first three stories. "The Patchwork Girl" was also published alone as a novel in 1986 (). The title derives from the in-universe term Flatlander (Niven), ''flatlander'', referring to an Earth-living human, as opposed to those who do not live on planets. Individual characters Sigmund Ausfaller Sigmund Ausfaller, a native of Earth, is a member of the Amalgamated Regional Militia ("ARM"), working in the Bureau of Alien Affairs on Earth. ''Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions'' is a satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, first published in 1884 by Seeley & Co. of London. Written pseudonymously by "A Square", the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. The Flatlanders
The Flatlanders are an American country band from Lubbock, Texas, United States, founded in 1972 by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. The group garnered little success during their brief original incarnation from 1972 to 1973, but when the individual members found success in their solo careers, interest in The Flatlanders was rekindled with the band reuniting several times since. An earlier incarnation of this band was known as The Double Mountain Fork Of The Brazos River Boys.
