Edward Flatau
Edward Flatau (27 December 1868, Płock – 7 June 1932, Warsaw) was a Polish neurologist and psychiatrist. He was a co-founder of the modern Polish neurology, an authority on the physiology and pathology of meningitis, co-founder of medical journals ''Neurologia Polska'' and ''Warszawskie Czasopismo Lekarskie'', and member of the Polish Academy of Learning. His name in medicine is linked to Redlich-Flatau syndrome, Flatau-Sterling torsion dystonia (type 1), Flatau-Schilder disease, and Flatau's law. His publications greatly influenced the developing field of neurology. He published a human brain atlas (1894), wrote a fundamental book on migraine (1912), established the localization principle of long fibers in the spinal cord (1893), and with Sterling published an early paper (1911) on progressive torsion spasm in children and suggested that the disease has a genetic component. Joanna Flatau
Joanna Antonina Flatau (4 February 1928 – 19 April 1999) was a Polish psychiatrist who developed innovative techniques for treating nervous disorders and established psychiatry services for Warsaw students. Life Joanna was one of two daughters of the well-known Polish neurologist Edward Flatau. She described her early initiation into psychiatry: "Mr. Maurycy Bornsztajn was a psychoanalyst who worked, at the beginning of the war, in our Warsaw apartment. I lay near the door and eavesdropped on his conversations with patients. These were fascinating lessons in psychiatry." During World War II she participated in the Warsaw Uprising and afterward was transported to work in the Wiener Holtzwerke factory. She wrote in her diary: "I remember a powerful, overwhelming nostalgia for Warsaw. Kazimierz Flatau (11 July 1910 in Warsaw – 25 July 2000 in Poznań) was a Polish harpsichordist, music critic, physicist, translator, and astrologist. He established school of harpsichord in Poznań, Poland. Education and life Flatau attended Karol Marcinkowski (I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Marcinkowskiego) high school in Poznań. He graduated from the Mathematics and Natural Sciences department of the University of Poznań. At the same time he attended Music Conservatoire (university music school) in Poznań. In 1931 he studied under Wanda Landowska at the École de Musique Ancienne in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt. Most of his life he was associated with district of Poznań-Jeżyce. Theodor Simon Flatau (4 June 1860 – 1937) was a German physician. Flatau was born in Lyck, East Prussia (today Ełk, Poland), where he attended school. He passed his Abitur at the Graues Kloster in Berlin and studied medicine at the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg.
