Flamenco Wave
Flamenco Wave (1 March 1986 – 2003) was an American-bred, Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 1988, she won a maiden race on her debut and then recorded her biggest victory when taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. She did not run again as a juvenile and finished last in both her races in 1989. After her retirement from racing, she became an outstanding broodmare, producing Starborough, Aristotle and Ballingarry, and being the female-line ancestor of St Nicholas Abbey and Charming Thought. She died in 2003 at the age of 17. Background Flamenco Wave was a "well-made" chestnut mare with a white star bred in Kentucky by Dan J Agnew & Cardiff Stud Farms. As a yearling, the filly was consigned to the Fasig-Tipton sale at Saratoga Springs, New York, where she was sold for $140,000 to representatives of Sheikh Mohammed. Desert Wine
Desert Wine (1980–2003) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his three-year-old season that included a runner-up finish in the Preakness Stakes and four stakes wins in California, including the Strub Stakes. Background A descendant of Nearco, he was sired by U.S. Hall of Fame inductee Damascus, himself the son of another Hall of Fame horse, Sword Dancer. He was bred by Brereton C. Jones out of the mare Anne Campbell, whose sire was Never Bend. White Muzzle
White Muzzle (21 March 1990 – February 2017) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After failing to win as a juvenile in 1992 he racked up five consecutive wins in the following spring including the Derby Italiano and the Churchill Stakes. Later that year he proved himself one of the best three-year-olds of his generation in Europe as he finished second to older horses in both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. As a four-year-old in 1994 he again ran second in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and won the Grand Prix de Deauville. A Shin Hikari (japanese language, Japanese エイシンヒカリ, foaled 3 May 2011) is a retired Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse. He began his racing career as a three-year-old in 2014 when he won his first five races including the Listed Ireland Trophy. In the following year, he won the Mijakooji Stakes, Epsom Cup and Mainichi Okan in Japan before establishing himself as one of the best racehorses in the world with a victory in the Hong Kong Cup. In the spring of 2016 he was sent to Europe and began his campaign with a ten Horse length, length win in the Prix d'Ispahan. Peter Davies (horse)
Peter Davies (3 March 1988 – after 2010) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. As a two-year-old in 1990 he was one of the best staying colts of his generation in Britain, winning all three of his races including the Somerville Tattersall Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy. He did not fulfil his early promise, failing to win a race in the next two seasons before winning twice as a five-year-old in 1993. He was later transferred to race in the United States and subsequently relocated to South Africa but had no further success before being retired from racing at the age of seven. Background Peter Davies was a chestnut horse with a white blaze and four long white socks bred in Kentucky at Pamela H Firman's Whileaway Farm. Southern Halo (1983–2009) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and Horse breeding#Terminology, sire. In his racing career he ran twenty-four times, winning five races and finishing second in the Graded stakes race, Grade I Swaps Stakes and Super Derby. He is chiefly notable for his remarkable career at stud where he was leading sire in Argentina on ten occasions and the sire of 170 stakes winners, including 56 Group/Grade I winners, and 16 champions. Almutawakel
Almutawakel (foaled in 1995 in Great Britain, died in 2007) was a British thoroughbred racehorse sired by Machiavellian and the Irish stakes-winning Green Desert mare, Elfaslah. Racing career Almutawakel's most prominent victory came in the 1999 Dubai World Cup. Going into the race at 44-1 and considered a heavy underdog, Almutawakel held his own and, with jockey Richard Hills at the helm, won the race by ¾ lengths. He beat out several prominent horses, such as Malek, Silver Charm, Daylami and Victory Gallop, winning the $3 million first place prize in the process. Miswaki (February 22, 1978 – December 17, 2004) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse that was a Group One winner in France and a stakes race winner in the United States. He was an important sire of 97 stakes race winners and was the Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1999 and 2001. Breeding and ownership Bred in Florida, Miswaki was sired by the very important Mr. Prospector that became a two-time leading sire in North America and a nine-time leading broodmare sire in North America. His dam was Hopespringseternal, a daughter of Buckpasser, the 1966 American Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee that became a four-time leading broodmare sire in North America. Tobougg
Tobougg (1998–2018) was a thoroughbred racehorse and sire, who was bred in Ireland, but trained in England and Dubai during a racing career which lasted from 2000 to 2002. He was named European Champion Two-Year-Old Colt for 2000 at the Cartier Racing Awards. He was unbeaten in three starts in his championship season including two Group One races, the Prix de la Salamandre in France and the Dewhurst Stakes in England. He never won another race although he was placed in The Derby, the Champion Stakes and the Hong Kong Cup. The Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes is a Grade II American thoroughbred horse race for horses age three and older over a distance of miles on the dirt held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in May. The race currently offers a purse of $200,000. History Early beginnings The race inaugurated in 1938 at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California as the Hollywood Gold Cup.
