Flag Officer Submarines (India)
The Flag Officer Submarines (FOSM) is the single-point class authority of submarines in the Indian Navy. A two star Officer holding the rank of Rear Admiral, the FOSM is responsible for submarine safety, submarine training, maintenance and operating schedules and operational readiness inspections. Rear admiral is a Two-star rank, two-star flag officer rank in the Indian Navy. It is the third-highest active rank in the Indian Navy. INS Satavahana
INS Satavahana is the premier Submarine Training Base of the Indian Navy and is located at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Training is carried out by the Submarine School (SMS) and the Escape Training School (ETS) and the School of Advanced Undersea Warfare (SAUW). History The unit was originally an integrated training establishment set up on 11 March 1974 for the purpose of training officers and sailors for ships and submarines of Soviet origin. The establishment was later named INS Satavahana and commissioned on 21 December 1974. In 1986 it was decided to disband the surface training school and convert INS Satavahana to an exclusive submarine training establishment. School of Advanced Undersea Warfare (SAUW) was established in December 2006 inside the premises of INS Satavahana, to train the crew of submarines of the nuclear submarines (Arihant-class submarine). Vice Admiral Vennam Srinivas, PVSM, AVSM, NM is a serving flag officer in the Indian Navy. He currently serves as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command. The Commandant of the National Defence College in India is the overall in-charge of all the functioning of the National Defence College including academics and administration. The Commandant of the college is a Three-star rank officer from the three Services in rotation for a term of two years. History In July 1959, Lieutenant General Kanwar Bahadur Singh was appointed the first Commandant of the college.
