Five Star Direct Democracy
Five Star Direct Democracy was a political alliance in the European Union created ahead of the 2019 European Parliament election by the then deputy prime minister of Italy Luigi Di Maio, with the intent of forming a political group in the European Parliament. The alliance consisted of five political parties which shared a syncretic political ideology centered around direct democracy and anti-establishment rhetoric. The alliance won 15 seats from two different countries (14 from Italy and 1 from Croatia), falling short of the 25 MEPs from seven member states required to form a political group in the European Parliament. The yellow vests protests or yellow-jacket protests (, ) were a series of populist, grassroots weekly protests in France that began on 17 November 2018 and ended on 28 June 2020. Some minor protests started again after the restrictions linked to COVID-19 were lifted. The Democracy in Europe Movement 2025, or DiEM25, is a left-wing European political alliance founded in 2016. It operates as a pan-European umbrella for subsidiary parties sharing the same name and branding (e.g. MeRA25, MERA25), and runs electoral lists with other affiliated parties.
