Five-finger Exercise
A five-finger exercise is a musical composition designed primarily to exercise all five fingers of the hand. A typical example is Hanon's '' The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises''. Chopin wrote a number of études (studies) that are widely regarded as musical compositions to train musical ability and dexterity of the fingers, with his Op.10 and Op.25. Another example of an exercise to develop musical skills may be Für Elise, it has been suggested that it was written as an exercise to practice skills on the piano. It has since been rewritten for many other instruments. The technique has also been part of scientific study. Another example being ''The art of piano playing: a scientific approach'' by George A. Kochevitsky, who explains some of the fundamentals in teaching the piano. In his chapter on ''Progressive ideas in nineteenth-century teaching'' he explains some of Chopin's idea's (see above), there is a mention of five-finger exercises. Charles-Louis Hanon
Charles-Louis Hanon (2 July 181919 March 1900) was a French piano pedagogue and composer. He is best known for his work '' The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises'', which is still used today for modern piano teaching, but over the years the method has also faced criticisms. He was born in Renescure, France in 1819, and died in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1900. Biography Charles-Louis Hanon was born in northern France in the village of Renescure on July 2, 1819. Trained as an organist by a local teacher, it is not known if he received more advanced musical education. At age 27, he moved a short distance west from Renescure to Boulogne-sur-Mer where he lived with his brother François who was also a musician. Music was never the exclusive focus of Hanon's life: he was also a devout Roman Catholic, a Third Order Franciscan and a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Virtuoso Pianist (''Le Pianiste virtuose'') by Charles-Louis Hanon (1819 – 1900), is a compilation of sixty exercises meant to train the pianist in speed, precision, agility, and strength of all of the fingers and flexibility in the wrists. First published in Boulogne, in 1873, ''The Virtuoso Pianist'' is Hanon's most well-known work, and is still widely used by piano instructors and pupils. However, the applicability of these nineteenth-century exercises has been questioned by some piano instructors today. Overview The exercises are intended to address common problems which could hamper the performance abilities of a student. These include "crossing of the thumb", strengthening of the fourth and fifth fingers, and quadruple- and triple-trills. Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO59, Biamonti Catalogue, Bia515) for solo piano, commonly known as "Für Elise" (, ), is one of Ludwig van Beethoven's most significant popular compositions. It was not published during his lifetime, only being discovered (by Ludwig Nohl) 40 years after his death, and may be termed either a Bagatelle (music), '' Bagatelle'' or an . The identity of "Elise" is unknown; researchers have suggested Therese Malfatti, Elisabeth Röckel, or Elise Barensfeld.
