First Swedish–Norwegian Union
The First Swedish–Norwegian union (Swedish language, Swedish: Den första svensk-norska unionen. Norwegian language, Norwegian: Den første svensk-norske union(en)), was a personal union of the separate kingdoms of Sweden (which included large parts of today's Finland) and Norway together with Norway's overseas colonies (including Iceland, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Northern Isles, northern isles of Orkney and Shetland). The union was founded by King Magnus IV of Sweden in 1319 and dissolved in 1355, briefly re-uniting in 1362 until 1365. Background A marriage took place between Eric Magnusson (duke), Duke Erik Magnusson, son of King Magnus III of Sweden and Duchess Ingeborg of Norway, Ingeborg, daughter and heiress of King Haakon V of Norway. His death in 1319 gave the kingdom of Norway by right of inheritance to their three-year-old son Magnus.
