First Funnies, Inc.
Funnies, Inc. was an American comic book packager of the late 1930s to 1940s period collectors and historians call the Golden Age of Comic Books. Founded by Lloyd Jacquet, it supplied the contents of early comics, including that of ''Marvel Comics'' #1 (cover-dated Oct. 1939), the first publication of what would become the multimedia corporation Marvel Comics. Company history Founding American comic books originated as oversized magazines that reprinted newspaper comic strips in color. These strips, coming from "the funny pages", were colloquially called "the funnies". Gradually, new material began to be created for the emerging medium of comic books. Samuel Maxwell "Jerry" Iger (; August 22, 1903 – September 5, 1990) was an American cartoonist and art-studio entrepreneur. With business partner Will Eisner, he co-founded Eisner & Iger, a comic book packager that produced comics on demand for new publishers during the late-1930s and 1940s period known to fans and historians as the Golden Age of Comic Books. Will Eisner
William Erwin Eisner ( ; March 6, 1917 – January 3, 2005) was an American cartoonist, writer, and entrepreneur. He was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in the American comic book industry, and his series '' The Spirit'' (1940–1952) was noted for its experiments in content and form. In 1978, he popularized the term "graphic novel" with the publication of his book '' A Contract with God''. He was an early contributor to formal comics studies with his book '' Comics and Sequential Art'' (1985). Eisner & Iger was a comic book packager that produced comics on demand for publishers entering the new medium during the late-1930s and 1940s, a period fans and historians call the Golden Age of Comic Books. Founded by Will Eisner and Jerry Iger, many of comic books' most significant creators, including Jack Kirby, entered the field through its doors. Eisner & Iger existed from 1936 to 1939. The company, formally titled the Eisner and Iger Studio, was also known as Syndicated Features Corporation. Eisner, in a 1997 interview, referred to the company as both "Eisner & Iger" and the "Art Syndication Company". In addition to comic books, the company also sold color comic strips, such as ''Adventures of the Red Mask'' and ''Pop's Night Out'', to newspapers. Centaur Publications (also known as Centaur Comics) was one of the earliest American comic book publishers. During their short existence, they created several colorful characters, including Bill Everett's Amazing-Man (Centaur Publications), Amazing-Man. History Comics Magazine Company Centaur developed primarily from the Comics Magazine Company, Inc. In 1936, comic-book entrepreneur Everett M.
