Firebase Argonne
Firebase Argonne (also known as Hill 1308) was a U.S. Marine Corps firebase located northwest of Khe Sanh, Quảng Trị Province in central Vietnam. History The base was built from 4–11 November 1968 by the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines approximately 10 km northwest of Khe Sanh and 2 km east of the Laotian border. The base provided excellent views of the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) transport network in Laos, but the Marines were unable to call fire missions due to U.S. Government policy. The base was abandoned by the Marines on 14 December 1968. PFC Robert H. Jenkins, Jr. part of a 12-man team from the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion would be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Argonne on 5 March 1969. On 20 March 1969 as part of Operation Purple Martin the Marines moved to reoccupy Firebase Argonne. 4th Marine Regiment (United States)
The 4th Marine Regiment is an infantry regiment of the United States Marine Corps. Based at Camp Schwab in Okinawa Prefecture, Okinawa, Japan, it is part of the 3rd Marine Division (United States), 3rd Marine Division of the III Marine Expeditionary Force. Karl Marlantes
Karl Arthur Marlantes (born December 24, 1944) is an American author and Vietnam War veteran. He has written four books: '' Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War'' (2010), ''What It Is Like to Go to War'' (2011), ''Deep River'' (2019), and ''Cold Victory'' (2024). Biography Early life Marlantes grew up in Seaside, Oregon, a small, coastal logging town. He played football and was student body president at Seaside High School, from which he graduated in 1963. His father was the school principal. He won a National Merit Scholarship and attended Yale University, where he was a member of Jonathan Edwards College and Beta Theta Pi, and played as wing forward in the rugby team. During his time at Yale, Marlantes trained in the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship at University College, Oxford. Landing Zone Mack (also known as Hill 484) was a U.S. Marine Corps base located northwest of Cam Lộ, Quảng Trị Province in central Vietnam. History The base was located on Mutter's Ridge north of The Rockpile, approximately 16 km northwest of Cam Lo. Hill 484 was the scene of heavy fighting between the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forces during Operation Prairie in early October 1966. It was captured by the Marines but then abandoned after the battle. The base was established by the 3rd Marines during Operation Lancaster II when it was dropped here on 13 August 1968 to head off the PAVN 64th Regiment which was believed to be moving into the area. 12th Littoral Combat Team (12LCT) is a littoral combat team based at Camp Hansen, in Okinawa, Japan.
